Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I always buy packages of wheat germ, chia seeds, hemp seeds and flax seeds and then I combine them, maybe once a week, into a jar in roughly equal amounts.

And then typically once a day I drop a tablespoon or two of the combined mixture into something like my pancakes, yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

Seeds in general are packed with good stuff.

I just bought some pumpkin seeds from Costco. So many micronutrients!

Our bike trip went south :frowning:

On day 1, DW woke up with a headache that worsened as day went on. On day 2 she woke up feeling worse and took a COVID test and it was positive. By the rules of the tour company, they kicked us off the boat the next day. We spent 3 nights in the city of Gorinchem. On our 2nd day there, i woke up feeling lousy.

The good news is that for both us, the sympthoms were fairly mild and short. I was largely back to normal after 48 hours.

We were able to book 2 extra nights in Waterloo. That part of the trip was amazing, we saw all the museums and closed out the trip with an 11 mile hike around the battlefield.

So sorry for everything

I was literally looking for a post from you after scrolling and seeing your pics above. Sorry about the bike trip. Sounds like you guys were able to make lemonade out of lemons, and I’m glad neither of you felt too terrible. Nice hiking distance.

I’m so sorry to read this update. What a frightening time for you and your H.

@jmnva06 - I’m sorry Covid found you and your wife. Glad you had a quick recovery and were able to hike.

Oh wow. I’m so sorry. What a disappointment. I am not good when plans change, nor with illness, so y’all have my sympathy! I’m glad it didn’t last as long as the last time and you were able to enjoy a portion of the trip.

Stupid COVID!!! Sounds as though you were able to pivot to a degree and salvage some fun, fitness and sightseeing.

SO many people I know who have traveled via airports lately and got COVID.

Sorry to read this update, but it sounds like you made the best of things and still had an awesome trip. Glad you are feeling better.

My fitness update is just that I’ve been getting at least 10k steps per day, playing tennis and/or pickleball several times a week, and H and I have added a weekly early morning 20 mile bike ride ride down the coast to our Friday morning routine. All fun things that I enjoy doing, so it just feels like living and enjoying summer rather than consciously exercising.

Sorry your trip went south (and not in a directional/map meaning). Glad you were able to make the best of it. Hope you find a way to someday re-plan a similar adventure.

We traveled recently and virtually no one in the airport or on the plane wears masks. I don’t wear my mask that often, but airports and planes (medical offices/offices too) are mandatory mask-wearing for me.

Agreed. I would add them for sure. Unfortunately, I can’t find pumpkin seeds in my local markets, whereas I can find the others quite easily.

Also, speed for me in the AM is everything and I’m finding it difficult to find 100% organic ground pumpkin seed to add to my mix. No time to be grinding pumpkin seed. :grinning:

Follow-up: we saw the oncologist this morning. Was expecting it to be the blood work/bone marrow to confirm diagnosis - H tried yesterday calling at 8:30 to see what exactly the appointment was for - nobody ever called him back. But instead it was just a consult with the doctor - who said from the test he has done that he feels its CLL and not aggressive and not to do anything but monitor it for now. and he’s writing a letter to clear him for surgery.

So I consider this the best of the bad case scenarios, but at the same time he (and the hospital/office here) didn’t instill a lot of confidence in us. We are in the process of setting up an appointment with Wake Forest. I faxed them all of H’s records yesterday. They said it’ll likely be late August which is fine. But… I got H to get 2+ years of his blood work to send them… (and that took 2 tries, the first they only gave him the last set of tests…) But upon reading them, they were elevated as far as back as 2020. Just barely then, but they’ve been steadily increasing each year, and never a word was said. Not pleased with that either, but one can’t do anything about that now.

So now H is trying to reschedule the hip. I’m trying to schedule the oncologist. And now we’re also trying to fit in a colonoscopy. His 3 years are up this month. Originally, the plan was to fix the hip and then do that, but this has throw everything out of what. And before this, that was his biggest cancer risk. (he had a large 2.5" mass removed in 2018. he was on the 6 months/1 year plan for awhile. 3 years is a big step.)

And I started my new workout yesterday. I like it so far. A nice change. In many ways it feels easier. And in other great news… while we were consulting with the doctor, older S texted that he got a promotion!

I think you gotta take that small win of cleared for no surgery at this time. And it sounds like you’re getting a second opinion - also wise and a small win if you can get in within reasonable time. Look at the teamwork you and your H have going to get things in line!

And small win for liking the new workout and BIG win for the promotion!!!

OK, a little fairy told me that I should hang out in the Health and Fitness forum, so here I am. I am not sure how I can contribute, but maybe my story will help a little. To make a super-long story short…

Nov. 2021 – Massive Heart Attack. CPR kept me going until ambulance arrived. Ambulance took me to hospital #1 that called for air ambulance to heart hospital. Helicopter ride (that I obviously don’t remember) to heart hospital for surgery that night or next day. Surgeon says that I will not survive heart surgery and refuses until 40+ days later. Spent 2 weeks unconscious in ICU. Dialysis for approximately 1 month because my heart took my kidneys with it. Doctors tell DW that they aren’t sure of damage, but I may not know words, be able to speak, and be prepared for me to need dialysis multiple times per week for the rest of my life. Every doctor I had told me that it took multiple miracles for me to still be here. You are here for a reason. First recollection of consciousness… the Lifetime Channel Hallmark Christmas Movie Marathon and I couldn’t figure out how to change the channel for 3 days and thought that the hospital was cruel to make me watch that.

Dec. 2021 – Kidneys and Heart finally strong enough to survive open heart surgery (CABG 10x, aka 10-way bypass). Surgery delayed 1 day because the woman in the next room needed a heart transplant and one became available on my original surgery day. 8 hours of open heart surgery. DW and D1 were the last ones in the waiting room at 11:00PM. Said my surgeon looked beat… I broke his record for # of bypasses. Home right before Christmas after 50 days in the hospital. Set goal return to work date with my surgeon. Took my first shower in 50 days (I was not allowed to shower in the hospital… fall risk). Note, DW and / or D1 visited me every day even though it was 1+ hours from my house. Note 2: D2 lives out of state, but also visited. She let me read chapters of her dissertation and also managed to get engaged while working on her PhD. She is now Dr. D2, PhD and is getting married this Fall.

Jan. 2022 – Recovering at home. Tough, but we made it. DW had to go behind me up the stairs and in front going down. Our running joke going down the stairs, Me: In case I fall, you’re my catcher, DW: and you’re my Rye. Started 12 weeks of cardiac rehab… worth every hour.

Feb. 2022 – “Procedure” to repair kidneys and ureteral stent. DW looks very young, nurse asks her if she would like to accompany her father to wait for surgery. Ugh! Eventually, procedure to remove stent (awake, no anesthesia, not pleasant).

Mar. 2022 – Back to work part-time, then full-time. Thanks to my company and client for giving me a chance to return. Beat the goal that I set after surgery by 1 day.

Apr. 2022 – Graduated from cardiac rehab.

I keep feeling better all the time. As of May 2023 all labs are now in the “normal” range. I just try to exercise everyday and eat as healthily as possible. My most recent doctor’s appointment after reviewing all labs, “This is excellent. I don’t know what you are doing, but people should be coming to you for advice. Nobody has cholesterol as good as yours.”

I left out a whole lot and you’re probably asleep by now, but bottom line is it’s good to be alive!

Wow @GSharpM7 - what an inspirational post. I’m sure that at least part of your recovery was due to your positive attitude and sense of humor. I’m glad you are here to post. Please keep up what ever you are doing and definitely hang out here.
