FIU Honors College v. Miami Dade Honors College

Well, let me start by telling you my STATS. I am Peruvian, living in US with parent's work visa. I came to the US in March 2009. I got a 4.3 Weighted and 3.7 Unweighted GPA. 2030 SAT composite (660 Math 680 CR 690 W). I had a fair amount of EC's: Involved in 4 clubs & Badminton Team. Also, with some distinctions from HS, etc.

I got into FSU (with no financial help), UM (with half tuition), FIU Honors (full ride), and Dade Honors (full ride). Now, I want to follow the Pre-medical track as an undergraduate and major in Neuroscience. The only schools that offer that major are FSU and UF (Where I really want to get my degree from). I want to stay in Miami for my first to years, go to either FIU Honors or Dade Honors, and then transfer out to the University of Florida.

Because both programs, FIU honors and Dade honors, have acquired some recognition I am pretty much stuck between these two schools and don't really know where to go. FIU will definitely offer me a nicer campus with good facilities, maybe better professors (not really sure about this one though), a variety of EC's, and the "university experience". On the other hand, I have heard their Honors College is kind of challenging, and because they are a University, they don't have any transfer agreements with UF, for example.

Dade Honors, on the other hand, is most of the times considered the "back up plan" for Miami HS students. I don't care about it being a community college as long as it leads me where I want to be in a couple of years, UF, with Neuroscience major. While researching on their website I learned that they have agreements with the University of Florida. I have also heard that the University of Florida, while accepting transfer students, gives preference to students coming from Community Colleges.

What would you do if you were in my position? Have you heard about how transferable FIU credits are? Please ANY student from FIU Honors or Dade Honors, as well as people with relevant information about these programs are welcome here. THANK YOU so much in advance for you feedback.

Definitely go to UM. UM has a neuroscience major and is affiliated with a wonderful medical school and hospital. And I don’t know how much it matters to you, but UM is much higher ranked and has a much better reputation than FIU or Dade.

Dade is a lot cheaper than FIU: You’ll actually pocket money if you get FL Bright Futures, and all the classes at Dade are honors. So your GPA will always be higher than that of a golden panther’s. UF also has an articulation agreement with MDC Honors, so you’re automatically accepted to UF after 2 years of Dade Honors. Plus, it’s harder to get into MDC Honors than it is to get into FIU Honors.

Hey, sorry if I’m intruding here or steering away from the main topic of this thread, but I was wondering if anyone here was aware if the Miami Dade Honors program is also affiliated with Cornell University? Reason being is that I’ve tried finding some sort of list of the schools that Miami Dade is in agreement with, but my search was to no avail. I do see, however, that FutureRiceOwl is aware that UF is in agreement with MDC, so I was wondering if you especially have any insight as to whether or not they are also in agreement with Cornell? Any response would be greatly appreciated and I look forward to them.

It is perfectly OK for you to pick up the phone and call the counseling office at Miami Dade and ask about this.

Hello, i am pretty sure by now you have made up your mind but I figured I would let you know what I think. I am currently a second year at Dade Honors and I cannot explain how much growth I have noticed myself go through, the friendships I have met along the way and the great support from the professor. You can look at the contract between MDC and other schools by googling MDC Matriculation agreements.

  1. Being a neuroscience major I feel like you will have MORE than enough time to get yourself into debt. And MDC gives you a 500$ book money, 600 stiped and pays for all your classes. Apart from all this any scholarships you receive such as Bright Futures, Fl. Pell Grant or any other will be given to YOU because The Honors College (THC) pays for all your classes.
  2. MDC has a contract with FIU honors so after MDC honors you can transfer there if you want to. Also, being FIU IS a 4 year university I feel like whe you transfer from there is kind of like saying you don’t like the school but MDC is only two years so when you transfer other schools will know the reason, they won’t have to wonder.
  3. Don’t let anyone fool you by saying MDC Honors is easy cuz its rlly not… a 3.5 gpa is not the same as in high school and the classes ARE hard (i read 6 novels in my english class just in one semester and had tests and papers to write for each of them). You also need to do community service, attend meeting every other thursday.
  4. MDC professor really help you… I dont think I have EVER had teachers that cared for me as much as the ones at Dade ANDDD the other students are really great we are all honestly, a family…
  5. MDC Honors has 2 seminars you can apply for (not both during the same semester tho) one of the seminar is to Salzburg, Austria and the other one is to Washington D.C. I participated in the Washington one this year and had a blast…
If you have any questions feel free to email me.

P.S. My two older sisters graduated from Dade Honors are they are at Georgetown University and Univesity of Wisconsin at Madison… not bad. oh! and on FULL rides

This convinced me to go to Miami Dade Honors. I have many more years to be in debt, and the benefits are really great!

the honors college at miami dade surpasses the fiu honors college in every way u can imagine. ESPECIALLY in transfer rates. Almost every student is going to great universities due to the schools great connections. If you get accepted into dade honors, dont ever consider fiu honors. (btw my information is completely unbiased, i go to neither)

What choice did you make? What school are you at now? Are you hppy with your decisions? Thanks!

Go to the one that will give you the best advantage!!!
