Five classes a quarter?

Does anyone here have experience taking five classes in one quarter? If so, would you recommend it? How difficult was it?

I did it this quarter but with mostly upper div classes. It was pure misery. I know some people can manage it really well but I seriously had no life. I will never do it again/recommend it to anyone

Even if it consisted of all lower division courses?

And did your grades suffer at the expense of trying to take that many classes?

Oh gosh. When I took a tour of the campus, the tour guide recommended taking 3 classes at a time. Max 4 when you get a feel for it.

I took 3 upper div and 2 lower div classes last quarter (19 graded units). And yeah, it was pretty miserable, although my gpa actually improved. In fact, I’m considering taking 20 graded units in the fall as well (I guess I don’t really learn from my mistakes). If you’re going to take 5 classes, you might want to make one of them Pass/No Pass to make life a little easier.

I really disagree with the “take-3-classes-to-get-used-to-everything” approach though. 4 is perfectly manageable.

Definitely agree with the few posts above mine. 3-4 is perfectly acceptable. College is not like high school, there is a TON more work involved with each class.

My GPA was fine, but like I said, I had no life. I didn’t party once all quarter and I rarely got to do things with my friends. I’m never doing it again, that’s not how college should be IMO

I find it kind of strange that they say that. It’s much harder to realize that 3 classes is too easy and add a class than find out that 4 is too hard and drop one. In the case of the OP, I would sign up for 5 classes, try it out for a couple weeks, and then decide if you would want to drop one.

how much work does a freshmen seminar require? would taking a seminar and four classes be too much?

The tour guide seemed a little obsessive about obtaining straight A’s. She couldn’t even recall the names of certain UCSD activities, though she was exuberant over the Geisel Library. It must really depend what you want.

I find that cramming in as many units possible at my community college and doing well is like an addictive form of fun. Of course, I’m sure it’s much less challenging than the rigor of UCSD classes.

Freshman Seminars require little to no work. I took 3 last quarter and I would have taken 4 but they canceled one.
