Florida and Hurricanes

I am really interested in some of the colleges and universities in Florida. But how bad is the hurricane situation in the Sunshine State colleges? Can someone even tell me the names of a few LACs or universities which give aid to international students?

Thanks,

U Miami is well-prepared for Hurricanes…buildings are rated to withstand winds and emergency planning is in-depth and exercised.

Look at these links:

I lived in South Florida for 10 years and never was in 1 hurricane! It all depends, because when we left they all started to come very fast. My grandmother was in Hurricane Andrew and that was really bad. I would suggest Flagler College in St. Augustine, it is very beautiful and I would start to look at them. Good Luck!

Outside the panhandle/keys Florida does not get hit too often by hurricanes (perhaps 1 in 10 or 1 in 20)

I grew up in Ft Lauderdale-never in 1 hurricane;in Charlotte,NC we were clobbered by Hugo

How is Rollins College? On their collegeboard page they say that they give aid to internationals, but on CC people are saying that Rollins doesnt give aid, so does Rollins give aid to internationals?

Check Rollins website. Not sure about the aid but they do have quite a large number of international students for a college of that size. Maybe because of their B school, not sure.

Rollins College is a good school, not too familiar with the area though. I would suggest Flagler though, you should look into it.

Rollins is in Winter Park, a nice, older money suburb of Orlando. Third best 4 yr institution in the state IMO, though I am biased to private schools vs. the state U monopoly, funded to the point of trying to eliminate Florida’s great private schools

It all depends on the year and area of Florida. I live in South Florida and the past three years haven’t been bad. In 2005, however, South Florida was hit pretty hard by a couple of Hurricanes. I was one when Andrew hit, so I don’t remember it, but that was obviously terrible. In South Florida, it all depends on the year, but I will second that UMiami is well-equipped to handle hurricanes. Rollins is, from what I hear, pretty good with aid. I know a kid from my high school who will be attending next year on a pretty generous scholarship. It’s a great school, in a nice area, with a beautiful campus! Not sure how the aid is for internationals, though. And also going to suggest Flagler.

Florida state schools tend to be very affordable, even for OOS and internationals, but I’m not going to highly recommend entering the state school system as I have run from it as fast as possible. The budget cuts the schools are going through are terrible, and the education budget is bad to begin with, as Florida doesn’t have an additional state tax. They’re pretty good for what you pay, though, but the only one that’s an LAC is New College of Florida.

It depends where you are. You don’t want to be near a college thats close to water, if you scared about hurricanes. We also have shelters, that many people go to, so your fine. Since 2005 nothing major has happend which is a good thing. I know umiami is big on international students

Also, if there was a hurricane scare and anyone needed to evacuate, I’d be willing to bet you’d have at least one friend who lived close enough to school that would invite you to stay with them. I’ve never heard of anyone being evacuated from anywhere (though, to be fair, I only know a few people to ever be evacuated and most of them didn’t go to school in Florida) that didn’t have anywhere to go.

I’ve lived in Florida all 18 years, been in a couple hurricanes. If you’re not an idiot, everything is fine. You will know if you need to evacuate, all the schools (well the good ones, UMiami, UF) are prepared.
I don’t suggest coming down here as I am going to NYC for college; it’s not as great as it seems down here. However, if you’re set on FL don’t factor hurricanes into your decision.
