Which colleges do you all consider to be the best in florida? I'm looking to apply to some schools in florida but so I haven't heard much good about any of them..

UF, FSU, Miami, New college of Florida, Eckerd, Flager

Bump... come on people someone here has to at least live in a state bordering florida

The best Fla. colleges are UF (which squeaked into the top tier group) and New College (the state's honor's college, small and like a liberal arts college),

All of the state's other colleges are ranked tier 2 or below. Take the time to check out a college ranking guide like US News' one and you'll see for yourself. Fla. is a large state in size and population, but it's not known for high quality colleges.

UF and UM are very good schools in Florida.

UF is a very solid public with a diverse collection of top-50 programs. FSU, in the state capital, has several highly ranked programs as well. New College rounds out the publics with quality programs in a LAC environment. For a large private in a semi-urban setting, U Miami is a good choice. Rollins is US-News top-ranked "southern masters" university, and offers a good option as a small private LAC.

UF #1
Miami and FSU are #2
NCF
USF and UCF are very up and coming schools.

If you know the area you're interested in and it fits with the best schools in Florida (as listed) you can get a fine education at reasonable cost.

UF - 47
UM - 54
FSU - 110
UCF - Tier 3

The 2006 USNews undergraduate data is:

UFlorida - 50th
UMiami - 55
Florida State - 109

U Central Florida >120

The 2007 US News Rankings were leaked early. Their is scanned in pictures to prove that this is in fact correct.

UF - 47
UM - 54
FSU - 110
UCF - Tier 3

I live in Florida when I'm not at school and I couldn't wait to get out of the state. Everything is so expensive and honestly, I wasn't too impressed by any of the schools.

everyone says new college is really great, but id be pretty wary of it. its students have i think the highest avg SATs, but they dont give letter grades and the whole system apparently isnt that great from what ive heard from students.

Didn't UCF drop to Tier 4?

Florida is a swamp, and although it is the best academically in Florida (a shade above Miami still), you couldn't pay me to be in Gainesville. Miami is more expensive, but its degree is worth about the same once you hit the real world, and you'll have a much better experience. Much better campus, 10x better surrounding area. Florida State is a good party school, and is above average academically. It is a mix of Florida and Miami I guess in terms of campus and surrounding area. Tallahassee is no Coral Gables, but its better than Gainesville and its campus and dorms, facilities in particular, are much better than that of Florida, maybe even Miami. Central Florida is a newer school, which is better than both Florida and FSU aesthetically. Very pretty campus and nice layout. Nice, newer dorms, and good facilities. It is more of a commuter school than the others, but still a fairly high out of state percentage, nothing too bad. It is getting better academically, particularly in Business, but is still 4th on the reputation list of Florida schools, although may be 2nd or 3rd in Business. Plus it is just outside Orlando, a much better city than all of the others, much more to do, nicer weather, nicer surroundings, etc. If you can get in to Miami, even with its decreasing acceptance rate and high tuition, then I would recommend that #1 of Florida schools. If you aren't quite that bright, then I would recommend visitng FSU and UCF and seeing which you like better, some ppl like the old school party atmosphere of FSU and the college town of Tallahassee. while some prefer the newer UCF which is better looking and more fun in Orlando. Hope this helps.

If you're planning on staying in Florida after graduation, a degree from one of the Florida publics can be very useful as there's a good alumnae network out of UF and FSU. Out of state, though, might be a different story.

Is this true?

Just one anecdote, but my sister is in UCF and she says that despite it being ranked below FSU and UF, it still offers great academics and a lot of career oppurtunites (especially in engineering, business, and hotel.)

What about U of Tampa? Anyone have any info?

we seem to get a florida thread every other week............
and they always end the same, Uf is better no UM is....blah,blah.
U TAMPA, is more popular outside of the state than inside, I know people in tampa that have never even heard of it.

My opinon, its thats its based on what you want to study....
Anything medicine related, UM is a great choice..
Anything science oriented UF great choice
Anything politically oriented...fsu Great choice
Education... UCF is a great school
Liberal arts... ncf
Business.. stetson and rollins are great

and so on....................
