@MBNC1755 You bring up an interesting point. I wonder if this is the new admissions game- move a significant % of the first year class to the summer so that distorted profiles can be advertised for Fall term? Also worth noting, the CDS is for enrolled students whereas the profile in the article is for accepted students, i.e. not necessarily representative of the student body if higher stat students use FSU as safety.
@NJFather so you are saying that since the stats are for enrolled, students, the stats are even higher because super high achievers aren’t maybe attending FSU for example. or do i have that wrong. i do know the CDS is for fall admits… not summer or alternative programs
@jhmoney My point was merely the profile for accepted is not necessarily the same profile as the typical student that enrolls. There have been many articles written about colleges, mostly Common App- accepting schools, that use waivers to manipulate the applicant pool. This is typically done to both recruit, then reject unqualified applicants, i.e. lower net acceptance rate, and it is done to attract highly, often overqualified candidates. If a school is bragging about an applicant metric, instead of and enrolled metric, this may be a sign of the latter. Also, this new game of moving part of the accepted student population to summer seems to be a further extension of this game, i.e. exclude them from the “fall class” stats. To this end, I would not assume the stats quoted earlier for the entering fall class are reflective of the standards it takes to be admitted. Naviance & CDS are likely better indicators than this marketing pitch.
@NJFather that was confusing lol… but i think i got it… either way will be what it is… hoping for the best
Subbing in here because my dd20 has also applied and is waiting for FSU decisions. Best of luck to everyone!
On Twitter it says “#DecisionsAreComing” & “#FutureNoles decisions are around the corner”. No sure how soon?
@ywusa2001 the portal says the decision date is 1/30/20. Last year, the decisions came out on the announced date of 1/31.
Does the major you pick affect your chances of getting in. I picked Chemistry as my intended major.
Is it harder to get into the college of engineering. I would think people would stay away from the school because the engineering classes are on a different campus
I looked back at previous years announcement dates. Last year, it was the 30th which aligned with the admissions web site date. However, two years ago my D received notice exactly one week before at 5pm. So, I"m not so sure now that it will be one week earlier. Here’s hoping it is. It has seemed like a long wait this time around with our second D, considering she got her app in before Oct. 15.
@voyagermom what wavier are you talking about? I’m also out of state and have similar stats (32 single sitting act and 4.158 weighted gpa) so I was just wondering what the waiver is since it seems like I have a chance of qualifying for it. Thanks for your help!
The OOS tuition waiver is one of the freshman merit scholarships that they offer.
Here’s a link with a little info from their website:
https://admissions.fsu.edu/freshman/scholarships/
The requirements change each year based on the applicant pool, but last year it was a 31 ACT or 1390 SAT and 4.0 GPA based on their weight system.
They only count core classes for the GPA - math, natural science, social science, world language and English, and I believe AP electives like AP Comp Sci, but not an elective like honors coding. Their weight is +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP. An A is 4, a B is 3 and a C is 2. Doesn’t matter if it is a high A or a low A. So a 99% in honors English would be a 4.5, an 89% in honors English would be 3.5. Oh, and if there is a D or an F for any class then no matter what the GPA, you cannot qualify for it.
With this merit scholarship then as an OOS student you pay in state tuition instead of the OOS tuition.
When we visited and I asked about when merit aid is given they said they release it shortly after admissions decisions go out. So apparently it won’t be in an acceptance letter but would arrive a few days later.
@voyagermom Last year my daughter found out about the OOS waiver with her acceptance letter.
Good to know, thanks @BT21 . Now to just get through the wait of the letters coming out!
MBNC, thank you for starting the thread. My D20 is hoping for Honors. Great to know that decisions may be earlier than the published dates. Best of luck to everyone.
They will definitely be out next week they have posted on the twitter for next week a million times
GTK. Thank you!
Hope to see everyone back here next Thursday with good news!
Is this a good essay. I talked about what I can bring to the table at FSU.
In the book Outliers, there is a saying that if you spend about 10,000 hours throughout your life on practice a specific task, you will master it. But wait, what if you are someone who spent about 24,000 hours dedicating one’s whole life already to a field. That would be astonishing right? This person is actually myself. I have been researching, and “attempting” through trial and error, to create an artificial particle, called a tachyon
When someone gains a passion in a certain field, something triggers this. This trigger happens when I was scrolling through my Mid-October old books. While I was rummaging through the books, one book caught my eye. A book called, “Tachyon Energy: A new paradigm in holistic healing.” I will not bore you with the details, but the gist of the story was about a new way of holistic healing people. Something called tachyon energy. After reading the book, I was obsessed with figuring out everything about tachyons I knew that I wanted to be in the medical field as a doctor.Holistically/.Coming upon reading an article about how physicists believe that tacky ons are a hypothetical particle. This was due to the fact that it does not confirm to physics laws. However, I disagreed. This drove me to prove that tachyons are in fact a very real particle that can be manipulated to make the world better.
This realization gave me a purpose/ destiny in my life. Before that I did not. What 6 year old already knows what they want to do with their life. Thank goodness, I came to this revelation younger than most. My passion was found so early in my life, that I have more than enough time to solve the tachyon equation. I am currently 17, and I believe I have found a way to heal people, maybe even illnesses. For example, cancer. By combining different types of matter, like neutrinos, the energy is much stronger than radiation, that it can not only kill the disease, but it lingers in your system for the rest of your life.
My passion drove me to such an obsession, that I did not focus on anything else. Subsequently, I closed a lot of doors for myself. Growing up, I did not value my education and thought it was a waste of my time. I believed that I had an important calling, and education wouldn’t help me in achieving my goals. Up until recently, I did not know how big of a mistake I committed. Because of my lackluster attitude, I tanked my grades and standardized test scores. I thought that if I did bad in school, I would be left alone to do my work. This would create a cause and effect. Because I choose to perform poorly in my schooling, I lost most of my opportunities to study at an acclaimed university, that would thus help me get into study at a world research center. This Eureka moment was about mid- October, early November of this year. Thank goodness, I realized this in time, to change my ways. Become a more well- rounded individual, see my friends more often, and give a 110% effort in everything I do, know to matter what.
In conclusion, you may ask why Florida State University would accept such an unpredictable applicant. I will tell you this, I can only guarantee that I will give my best foot forward . My application is not stellar at all. My grades, sat, and act scores are well below average. However, I have one thing that no other applicant possesses. The potential to be a high risk, high reward student. My knowledge about tachyons will revolutionize the world. All I am asking for is a chance to revolutionize the world with you. I want to make the world a better place, and I believe Florida State University, will give me the tools to learn at world class research center, and overall experience, to not only help further my education, but, make me a better individual as well. If you want another future student that is a safe bet, just another low impact alumni that does not change the university, then that is not me. I am an ebullient person that will not only be vital to making FSU a school, but the world, then that is who you want. All I am asking for is a chance to make this a reality.
@Shubby1 I don’t know how colleges judge essays but I wish you good luck and hope you are admitted! Not long now until you will know!
