Interested in talking about status/expectations with anyone who has applied this year for summer/fall 2007 admissions.

I have friends who have applied and gotten into all three of those schools (not one person to all three, different people to each of them, haha) for next year. I don't know their specific stats, so I'm not too much help to you, but I know people who are headed for sure to both FSU and UCF, and people who already attend there, so good luck with your apps, and I hope you enjoy whichever one you choose/get in to.

Anyone can get into FSU, UCF, & USF.

USF didn't even require an essay and they waived my application fee.

The only competitive schools in Florida are UF and UMiami

Gee I wish it was true, their acceptance rate is only around 60-65% and you need high GPA and test scores to make it.

I would agree that USF is the easier of the three, but they are all competitive. Your correct UF is on the far end of the distribution.

I sort of agree with UbiquityEssence. UF & UM are the most competitive but I wouldn't say the only competitive. Most of people @ my school that got rejected from UF got accepted into USF. IMHO...If you can't get into USF then you simply didn't work hard enough in high school. The people that were accepted to USF from my school were not that great stats wise. I think they were barely in the top 10% of the class.

Top 10% is usually pretty good unless the school wasn't that good I don't know.

you should be fine. UCF, FSU, USF accepts everyone. 65% acceptance rate is pretty high. Just don't apply to go to those schools in May....cuz by then the freshmen class is full

^FSU accepts everyone - except the kids that don't get in. To them, it's not such a chipper situation. Whether by ability or lack of it, it's a heartbreak not to be admitted to those who dream of being accepted by this "lowly" state university.

Maybe this is not you, then congratulations on your good fortune. But you should really have just a touch of humility and compassion for those that later read your post and are grieved by such an attitude.

Sooner or later this kind of heartbreak will be visited upon you - life is like that. It's not so much fun, then. I hope you find someone with compassion who will wish you well, whether you deserve it or not.

I don't think my stats will help you answer your question at all, but since you asked I'll post them. I'll be at UCF starting this fall.

National Merit Commended

I ended up being accepted the day after they received my application and was offered a very nice merit scholarship a few weeks later. Worked out perfectly for me, as UCF was my first choice the whole way. I knew my status in September when everyone else was feeling the heat. I can't wait to get started this fall.

Why UCF (besides the scholarship)? Why not instate pubilc college in Georgia?

I'm going into the Hospitality Program, and there weren't any viable options in state. Out of state, UCF seemed to be the only one that matched what I was looking for. The location and campus are exactly what I was looking for, so while it may not be as prestigious as other places I think I'll be happiest there.

Hospitality? Did you look at FSU's program?

FSU's progam is Top-5 in the US according to Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality & Tourism, 2006. Not to mention it's a Tier-1 national university where UCF is rated Tier 4.

Look at Cornell's Hotel School and Purdue's if you want also. great schools.

I wasn't very impressed by FSU's program, and living in Tallahassee isn't nearly as appealing to me as living in Orlando. UCF's program is on the rise, has a lot more options, and has a ton of input from industry leaders in Orlando. I think the fact that the school built a brand new campus specifically for it shows how serious they are about the program becoming one of the best.

It just makes sense IMO to attend a hospitality school in the heart of US tourism.

Well, you have to go where you will be happy. Certainly that's the bottom line.

However, the FSU College of Business, of which Hospitality Administration is a part, is ranked nationally by the 2007 USNews undergraduate business listing at #43 overall and #25 among public universities. By comparison, UF's COB is #32, with UMiami at #70, with UCF coming in at #143 overall. Rankings are helpful sometimes, especially if the differences are great.

Specifically concerning the HA program (from the FSU COB website):

Industry recruiters ranked the Dedman School of Hospitality first in services offered to recruiters, first in
work experience, first in ability to develop strategies, first in ability to be results oriented, first in adaptability,
first in professionalism, first in entrepreneurial skills and tied for first in students’ global perspective. (2006)
• The Dedman School is ranked in the top five schools across the nation by industry recruiters. (2006)
• The Dedman School of Hospitality is ranked in the top 10 for the quality of its facilities.
• The Dedman School of Hospitality has a 100-percent placement rate of its graduates and is a favored
hiring source of the world’s leading hotel, restaurant and resort industry.

UCF is, however, much closer to Disney World.

quit lobbying so hard for FSU parent2noles. Its a school for UF rejects and that is it.
Go Gators

coasterphil good choice with UCF for hospitality. you will have access to better networking. if you get a part time job in certain hotels you can apply for obscure scholarships that pay up to $5,000. good luck!!

To parents2noles. I'm apologize if you may think I am lacking compassion. I am not lacking compassion. I am stating what is fact. I have bare witness to students who cruise through their free American Education barely applying themselves and then expect to be gain admission to any college. How is that a shock for them? Maintaining a C average, when they are perfectly literate and come from a good family life. They don't appreciate the opportunites they have until high school ends and reality begins to set.

There are families from other countries who sacrifice immensely to send their daughter or son to the states to receive an exceptional American education. When the students arrive they speak no english but quickly learn and surpasses "American" students who have been in an American school system their all lives. I have witnessed students who arrive in the states in freshmen year, knowing no english, having no family and yet are able to flourish and gain admission to a good university withou the aid or wisdom of a parent. How would you child compare to them? I apologize if I do not emit sympathy. I have sympathy for students who are disadvantaged and are rejected. But if the applicant has had the opportunity and resources but lack the motivation and drive to succeed than....

FSU, UCF, USF are wonderful schools. But you must admit they are not HYPMS schools and their standards are realistic and they cater to everyone.

So before you attack me and lecture me about humility consider your position. You are a parent of a student. Obviously, you are an active parent who is very involved with your children's academics. Did you aid your child when they applied to FSU? Did you sit down beside them and hold their hand while they were typing their mailing address and inquire about their residency? Or did you do it all for them? With your support, would your child have been able to attend a better university, if they had better stats, regardless if they wanted to or not? What is irritating to me are parents who practically do college applications for students. I had one my mom discuss with me saying "Yes we sat down and did the application and we sent out the Notre Dame application yesterday but I think we forgot to check the early decision box." There are parents on this message board inquiring information to benefit their children. Yes, they are also providing advice as well, which is greatly appreciated. But consider this, if the student is 18 that means they are legal adults. Why can't they seek out information on their own without mommy and daddy's help? It is infurirating to me that you are lamenting me on humility and heartbreak when you are just a parent who probably manages everything for your children.

.....My point is I believe anyone who actually worked hard and truly tried can gain admission into FUS, USF, and UCF.

I apologize if I come off condescending. I am not critcizing anyone but merely stating my opinion. You may interpret it however you wish.

Have a nice day. =)

I applied to FSU, UCF, UF, USF, UM and some other out of state schools that wouldn't be of intrest to you.

I have a 3.9 wieghted GPA (I go to a hard school, but it's public) and a 24 ACT.

I got accepted at FSU, I applied for the 1st deadline and had no issue getting in. Most people that go to my school don't.
FSU's academics aren't terrific but they're alright and for film they're awesome. Waiting for my interview with their film school to come up. If I get into their film school (they only accept 20 students a year) I plan on going.

UF deffered me, then rejected me. Not that I wanted to go there, my mom's alumni, she wanted me to go. I visited it and was not impressed, they're all snooty and unpleasant. They have no film major until you get to your junior year. It sucks.

UM accepted me, but I said no. It's not worth the money and I want to leave home.

UCF accepted me, their film school did not. I said no.

USF deffered me, which I am very confused about. B/c I am way above them. Again, not loosing sleep over it.

You really shouldn't have a problem going anywhere in florida if we aren't talking about UF. If you apply early, espcially.

Good luck, I'm willing to talk if you have any questions.

Hmmm....maybe USF didn't have your transcripts on file? I had to send my transcritps to them like 6 times literally...and called to make sure they received it. but that was my backup backup school. I recently checked UF's stats and their freshmen admissions dropped to 48% this year. Before it was like fifty something percent. UM seriously costs like a leg and arm to attend with out financial aid. oh well. good luck with FSU! my best friend is going there for music. it was either FSU or UM. so far UM hasn't offered her any significant financial aid.

Yes the USF deferal does sound surprising. They have this chart on their website that they say is just for evaluation but I think it's their cheat sheet for acceptances. By looking at it you should be in.
