schaefer406, My Daughter has been accepted into FSU for next year, and received the full out of state tuition waiver (so we are paying the in-state tuition) and she also received the freshman scholarship. Based on your post it sounds like you have already been accepted and received scholarship information, so if you aren’t sure whether you received the Out of State waiver (or partial waiver) check your scholarship letter or your scholarship information on the application portal (it is listed there). At our admissions presentation they provided ranges that typically qualify for the full or partial waiver. If you don’t have this info reply back and I will see if I can find it.
My apologies I do not have the info and I did check my portal. So if you could provide me with the info I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so so much
Also could you compare your daughter’s stats to mine? thanks!
Another option at FSU is to do the first year at one of the approved study abroad programs and when you return you pay instate rates. https://www.international.fsu.edu/FYA.aspx
Are you a female? FSU is considering adding women’s lacrosse as a D1 sport. I think the decision is to be made soon, and then there will be at least a year when the new coach is recruiting before play would start. If that’s the case, it changes the entire make up of the club team (not just for fun anymore)
This option was already mentioned in post #12:
and addressed by OP in post #13:
OP could ask himself whether he’s rather attend fsu after a year abroad, or another big Florida public if those became his only options.

And yes my parents are planning on taking out the loans for the rest.

? And your parents have recently separated and are now having to pay for two households…
I wouldn’t count on them co-signing loans and this is why: They’ll be facing many unknown costs associated with two households and divorce attorneys.
When a parent consigns, only one cosigns. This could be a very sticky issue with separated parents, since only one would be taking on the big risk of co-signing.
Sounds like a lot more fact finding within all the possibilities with FSU and where lacrosse is for D1. If they will be making that transition, is it worthwhile to get a better scholarship package (including athletic) with a gap year?
I agree with other posters about finding other opportunities that are financially friendly and are a ‘match’ for you. Looking late in the game though.
Parents separating is not only a financial strain but an emotional one.
IMHO you need to be more adult in looking at the opportunities and possibilities, and not say you will be unhappy unless you attend FSU. It may be that there are other colleges out there that are a match for you and a better fit for the financial situation.
A few months ago you stated you were going to attend WVU:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/1937522-wvu-dorm-help.html
You also have stated that you are interested in medical or dental school and don’t want a lot of debt. How will FSU attendance meet those goals?
After doing some research today I discovered that at the University of Central Florida, according to their net price calculator it would cost me $15,500 per year. Now I do not know if this is accurate, but that would make my dream of going to school in Florida much more affordable.
Please copy/paste the UCF NPC results. And did it ask for test scores?
How much will each of your parents pay each year towards YOUR college costs? Please ask them that Q.
Estimated tuition and fees $21,556
- Estimated room and board charges
(Includes rooming accommodations and meals)
$9,758 - Estimated cost of books and supplies $1,146
- Estimated other expenses
(Personal expenses, transportation, etc.) $4,628
Estimated total cost of attendance: $37,088
- Estimated total grant aid:
(Includes both merit and need based grant and scholarship aid from Federal, State, or Local Governments, or the Institution)
$22,668
Estimated Net Price After Grants and Scholarships: $14,420
–UCF runs off of their Pegasus scholarship program, which from what I have researched only caters to very high achieving students…I’m more on the mediocre side I assume with only a 3.85 gpa 1230/1600 SAT and 18 honors/AP total for my high school career
What did FSU say when you called?
Regardless, unless you have a definite answer, apply to other colleges in Florida.
Agree about making sure to get application in to all that are financially feasible. You are dealing with a lot of unknowns still. What are your parents saying at this point?
I caution you to consider the impact of your choice on your younger siblings. You are assuming that your younger sister will get a scholarship. What happens if she doesn’t. At that point, your parents have co-signed or taken loans out for you. Would they be able to help her? Doesn’t sound like the borrowing ability is there. So you get your dream and the sister and brother get swat?
What is so special about Florida that cannot be found anywhere else? I get you want to live there. So get a degree and move there after college. Dreams can be funny. As you dream about them everything is perfect. However the reality often falls way short of the dream.
College is four years. It will go by faster than you can imagine. Make the best of it where you can afford to go. With the right attitude and hard work you should be able to make just about any college work. It all boils down to what you make of it. Really that all anybody can do. Than move on to the next 60 years of your life.
I was in a similar situation. My dream school was university of Florida (I was also accepted into fsu but summer session and never checked if I received any scholarships which was very dumb of me!) but I received absolutely no scholarships or aid so cost of attendance was $40,000 a year. I frantically applied to cheaper schools with rolling admissions (west Chester and university of tampa). I am also from PA and honestly it does suck with our in state tuition. What is even more annoying is that Florida residents attend our dream schools for practically free. But anyway got a really good scholarship at university of Tampa (pay about $18,000 a year), however, I never visited the campus and As soon as I showed up (the day before I had to move in) I started crying haha. I’m not a big fan of small schools either. Really feel like you are missing out on some big college experience. Just finished my first semester and I want to transfer
Yeah PA is the absolute worst for college, even the state schools are expensive!! I just can’t stand smaller schools. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you find a great school to transfer to
@schaefer406 I looked for our notes from the admissions presentation about the OOS tuition waiver criteria, but couldn’t find them. Unfortunately it was almost a year ago. The criteria were clearly outlined in the presentation, so you probably could call admissions and ask them. I think it was a recalculated GPA (they recalculate honors and AP class GPA) and ACT/SAT score minimum. Sorry I could be more help. Good luck with your search process.
