Florida Virtual School

Do you have to live in the United States to take courses with FVS?

Both of my daughters took FLVS courses. They did all their Physical Fitness required courses and one did Biology Honors. They do require a lot of busy work and keeping up with teacher phone calls, but if you complete the required work on schedule, you should get A's. All but one of their teachers were really great to work with and the one that wasn't had some medical problems at the time.

One word of caution is to check with the colleges you are interested in applying to as to how they view the online courses. FLVS has a pretty good reputation, but several of the schools said that if a course like biology was offered at their school, then they would rather it be taken there. No one cared if PE was done online.

Thanks.

And greensticky I'm not sure. FLVS is free for Florida residents, but it gets pretty expensive out-of-state.

You can check their website: http://flvs.net

One more thing: How do you make the course an honors course? I don't see the option anywhere.

When you talk with your instructor in the welcome call, just mention that you want to folllow the honors course. ^^

Has anyone ever taken AP bio there? Can you describe your experiences?

Thanks wbb :)

First, you have to tell your teacher you want to do the honors work.

Then, in the assessments area you'll see assignments specifically for honors students. If you want honors credit, you have to do those assignments. Once you finish a semester, your teacher will make sure you did those assignments and give you credit for honors.

By the way, I see you live in Florida as well (I do too, so our curriculums are probably close to identical). Do you know what math course comes after Calc?

Calc AB -> Calc BC

Or you could take BC first, but it is very fast-paced.

If you have taken Calc BC and have time for more math courses, then you can to go to a community college and take multivariable calc, linear algebra, differential equations, etc. through dual enrollment.

^^ya some schools don't offer Calc BC and instead do CalcII/CalcIII which is each a semester, but get credit as if it was a whole year.

My school doesn't have any higher level of Calc. The only other course I see is AP Stat

my school offers multivariable calc, but thats because there is a high demand for it

Do you meet at a specific time each week with the teacher, or do you just watch the stuff online and do it. Theoretically, you could look up the answers to any test/quiz/homework and they wouldn't know it... are there papers in AP econs? Anyone taken AP Psych thru this?

You never physically meet with the teacher. You can call, chat with, and email them....but that's about it.

All the material...everything you learn...is online. And yes, you could look up answers and they wouldn't know it. However, you need to understand everything before the test because they are timed.

What do you mean by papers? Like write papers? You do everything through word (sometimes powerpoint), but you also have to complete oral assessments with the teacher, and you can't really cheat your way out of those. :D

FLVS doesn't offer AP Psychology yet. They only have 10 AP courses, but with each new year they offer new courses.

How do you complete an oral assesment with them?

You need to call them or they call you.

for tests, you can easily look up just about every answer if necessary because their is plenty of time given. Even for orals you can just have notes in front of you or your computer on...
