Florida Virtual School

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of taking an online course over the summer in order to gain more APs on my schedule. I have only a few more weeks left to sign up for a course in order to be recognized by my school and was wondering what you know about it.

How does it work?
How is the workload?
Can I accomplish a two semester course in around 9-12 weeks?
How does grading work?

Also, what courses would be the easiest to take online if I do decide that route:

AP Macroeconomics
AP Microeconomics
AP Psychology
AP Human Geography

Thanks!!

This is something you need to talk with your guidance counsellor about. Do you know that the virtual school offers those courses?

The easiest to take online, I’d say, would be AP Human Geography. But that’s just my opinion.

FLVS, especially in AP courses, will nag you to death if you don’t submit anything during one week, even if you’re ahead of pace. Make sure you’re prepared for that. Also, I’ve found that the quality of the courses really lie within how you can manage your study materials.

For example, I took AP US History online this year. They essentially gave us a book code and said have at it. However, I searched the course materials and found a lecture set that I eventually used for the entire course. Granted, I did miss out on some details, but it was the only efficient way without reading the ENTIRE book. Most courses don’t have these lectures. Usually you’re just given a book, and the course lessons rarely ever cover enough information.

The grading absolutely lies within the power of the teacher. I had a Spanish teacher that made me resubmit assignments upwards of 4 times each, and I had teachers that pretty much gave me automatic 100s.

I think any course on FLVS, even ap courses, can be done extremely quickly, if you wish to put innumerable amount of hours per day into it. I spent 12 hours a day doing AP Microeconomics, and I finished it in 4 days (reviewed it extensively afterwards, mind you). It’s all up to how you want to do it.

And forgot to mention, you can only take up to three courses at a time. Keep that in mind when you pick your selection. It looked like all the classes you chose were fairly easy. You’ll have no problem.

I took APES and Stats on FLVS.
APES was ehhh but I loved stats!
Workload was manageable & they grade really easily.
It automatically went into my transcript when I finished a segment.
Sorry I didn’t go in depth

Thanks RedKnightmare! You’ve definitely helped a lot.

What were the typical assignments like/what did they include?

How often did they quiz/test you? And were you allowed to make those up or was that at the discretion of the teacher? Thanks!

On the FLVS website, it says that they’ll automatically go into your transcript. You just need to talk to your high school first to set it up.

If anyone can answer the questions in my previous post, it’d be greatly appreciated. Thanks so so so much!
