Hi everyone, I'm attending IU this fall as a vocal performance major. I have a question that is more directed at out of state students. I'm from Sacramento, CA and I was curious as to how hard it would be to get home on thanksgiving. Is the Indianapolis Airport crazy with delays? I only ask this because I'm trying to prepare ahead, and I don't want to waste the money on a flight just to be one of those people I watch on the news each thanksgiving asleep at the airport.

I’m not an out of state student, but I have used Indianapolis Airport many times. The kind of delays you are thinking about don’t seem to happen frequently at IND unless other airports are delayed. In the dozens of times I flown out of IND, I can only think of one time my flight was delayed for an hour and that was due to a plane arriving late from another airport.

Those kinds of crazy delays are frequently due to weather conditions. You can’t plan for that. One tip, it maybe tempting to take a flight that goes to Ohare or Midway in Chicago and then on to Sacramento. You’re more likely to see delays there.

This is an interesting website that shows delay stats for different airports. [RITA | BTS | Transtats](http://www.transtats.bts.gov/HomeDrillChart.asp?URL_SelectMonth=5&URL_SelectYear=2012)

You’re very unlikely to see those delays in Indy. If you can avoid flying through Chicago though without spending more money, you probably should.

You do know that IU has changed its calendar right? If you are still sleeping in an airport on Txsgiving, that would mean that you would have had to been there for 6 days given that IU now starts the break the previous weekend…

Yeah I know that, I was more talking about missing quite a bit of my break trying to get a flight.

I wouldn’t worry at all. I’m an out-of-state student and the Indy airport is pretty much never crowded, even before major holidays when I fly home. It’s actually the least headache-inducing airport of the many that I’ve been to. The only time I experienced a delay was when I was flying from Indy into O’Hare for a connecting flight to Chicago (and they are notorious for their delays).
