I got an email from Swarthmore recently saying that I had been selected as a possible candidate for a focus group of high school seniors. The purpose of this group is to "better understand how Swarthmore College is perceived by students currently looking at various colleges and universities."

Has anyone else recieved this email? Do you know how people have been selected as possible candidates? Is it just sent to all people in a certain area?

This just seems too good to be true - apparently they're paying the people who get selected...

I got a similar email for a focus group of alumni. Unfortunately I won’t be able to participate, as I have other plans for the evening when the focus group is scheduled. The college is going to be launching a new strategic plan (and capital campaign), and wants to make sure its future vision is aligned with all its various interest groups - alumni, current students, potential students, parents, staff, etc.

I received the email for alumni too, and like dadx3 I can’t participate because I already had plans.

I imagine they were drawing on a certain geographic sector for this particular meeting, but I know that they’re hosting groups elsewhere as well, so I’m sure people in other areas will get similar invitations soon (if they haven’t already).
