When choosing classes, do you pick the most sensible/practical classes that will look good to colleges? Or do you follow your heart and pick classes that truly interest you, even if they don't apply to your intended major/whatever?

Follow your brain. Never follow your heart.

Depends. Taking Underwater Basket-weaving over AP Economics is probably a bad idea, but taking Orchestra or Greek Mythology over AP Econ might not be so disastrous. Just keep in mind that EC’s are there for following what interests you, but you’ll want to take at least some relevant classes in high school.

But, psh, don’t worry about your major yet. Just get a strong basis so you can skip the tedious introductory classes.

Be a romantic, and follow your heart. :]

I think they both come from the frontal lobe

and

Omg meadow36’s Location is so obscene.

Hahaha misteranthony! I agree with both of your points.

I want the most rigorous courseload possible. It looks good to college, but it’s also a waste of time to take most elective courses at my school. I would rather get a broad high school education and take elective courses/courses unrelated to my major in college when I will actually learn a lot.

The most interesting courses, every time.

Well, since your heart actually isn’t the center of your emotions… I would go with following my brain.

you guys are a bunch of smartasses, but what should I have expected XD

given a choice, do what makes you happy. now you might be happy because you love the material or you might be happy because you think you are increasing your chances of acceptance to college. the choice is yours. i would say though… do the material/subject that will make you happy because college acceptances are extremely variable and random… so if you take that AP bio class that you really hate so that XYZ super school will take you and they don’t… well… then you wasted your time taking the class when you could have been happy and shown a possibly more passionate application and gotten into XYZ super school by taking the class that would make you happy. if it is a choice of taking us history or ap us history, i would say take ap. but if it is ap us history that you love or ap biology that you don’t… take ap (or non) us history over ap bio.

hth!

I find that, so far, my “heart” and “brain” have common interests, i.e. the practical classes happen to interest me the most.

I follow my genitals. Y’know, the motion of the ocean.

Pick classes that you know you’re interested in/go towards your major and then some that are challenging that you may or mat not succeed in.

For instance, I picked AP Chem b/c I know I’ll succeed in it and goes along with my biology interests. I also picked AP Physics even though I was unsure I would succeed (I don’t really grasp abstract concepts that well), but would definitely challenge me. I found out later that you need both to get into med school. Awesome :)
