Thanks Karot -- I do know about cueats, but I was hoping one of you posters could give me your opinion first hand.

Ah.

I've been to two places for chinese on the list. One of them was pretty cheap (5 bucks for sesame chicken and rice) but I thought it tasted way too saucy. The other was columbia Cottage which was alright but horribly expensive. If you really want good chinese food, you'll have to travel to flushing.

i'm gonna say my piece about columbia cottage: I have never once eaten there and NOT gotten food poisoning. I think i'm 4 for 4. Nobody else has had similar experiences, but those are mine. And boy does it hurt. They lure you in with the "all you can drink free wine" stuff, but it's really diluted and not worth the 12 hours of bed-ridden stomach pain afterwards.

As for good chinese places, I live a few blocks east of campus now but Empire Corner is still good chinese delivery as far as I can tell. Ollie's has the best General's chicken, but everything there is really greasy.

What you want to look into, if you like sushi, is Saji's. it's a hole-in-the-wall on 109th, just east of broadway (next to Rack & Soul, which is legitimately great BBQ ribs). Saji's hasn't yet figured out that japanese food is supposed to be expensive. You can get a 3-pack of rolls (i.e. salmon, tuna, and spicy salmon, all with avocado ) for $8. it's more than i can eat in one sitting. It's not the absolute best sushi i've ever had, but it's pretty darn good, and great for the price. And for $27, you can get their party platter which is 11 rolls. Never gonna see a better price than that. Just invite your friends.

went to Rack and Soul with our son--that place is great! He wants to take us uptown to Dinosaur BBQ, but we haven't gotten to it yet. He says it's even better. (Not that the OP asked about BBQ...)

Actually, recommendations for any and all cuisines are welcome. Thanks all for your input. It's much appreciated. Keep the suggestions coming.

in MY experience....I think columbia cottage actually has some of the BEST quality chinese food around campus....i'v had the wine once and didn't get sick....i think it was red wine though....they give you a free glass of wine some day with an entree order.

I find Empire Corner and Ollie's to be absolutely disgusting....especially empire corner...the quality is horrid....it reminds me of one of those chinese places in the bronx where they hand you your food through a little hole in the plexi glass so you don't rob them.

Saji's is AMAZING....they have very good (and cheap) japanese curry too. Tomo (111 and broadway) is also pretty good in terms of japanese food.

Chipotle (110 and bway) is very tasty (just went there today) but quite expensive.

Max Soha (123 and amsterdam) is a very good place for eating in, dates, or even take-out delivery.....their $10 (meat) lasagna is unbeatable and very filling.

Dinosaur BBQ (130th and 12th...certainly not somewhere you'll be going regularly) is hands down the best BBQ i've had in NY....totally beats Dallas BBQ and Texas BBQ.....they certainly don't serve the healthiest food but it is top notch.

Pinnacle (formerly Pronto) at 115 (maybe 114?) and Bway is really convenient and used to be pretty good. I've heard it's gone downhill, though.

Run for the hills. Or, more like it, take the 1 down to Canal Street and go to New Green Bo or something.

That's not saying much. It's all crap.

That you even mentioned Dallas BBQ as a contender for best BBQ in NY is friggin sad, dude. Maybe Blue Smoke or Daisy May's... but Dallas BBQ? That's total crap.

Tomo is passable but not great. They used to have a weekday dinner special that was a pretty good deal compared to their regular pricing -- maybe $10 bucks for a teriyaki dish, a california roll, tempura, etc. If they still have it, it's worth going for that if you can't get out of Morningside and want a decent Japanese meal.

Hamilton/Stroko's have some pretty good warm/"designer" sandwiches.

There's a hole-in the wall Mexican place on Amsterdam at like 107-108 that's okay and pretty cheap, but I can't remember the name. But you gotta walk through some of the projects to get there.

There's Saigon Grill, too, which is okay Vietnamese. I don't know if they're closed down still -- there's some huge controversy about how they were allegedly paying their workers slave wages.

seconded. if koronets is the mother of all pizza slices, TyF is the mother of all burritos. 7$ for something that is easily 4lbs. they are a bit slow but usually worth the wait

Hamilton Deli (HamDel) i think is great. relatively cheap for good sized sandwiches

Taqueria is good.

I'm a bit of a BBQ connoisseur, and for my money, Rack & Soul > Dinosaur BBQ. Dinosaur gets more press because it's bigger and advertises, but the ribs are dry and under-smoked compared to Rack & Soul. Much more like Memphis-style there, while Dinosaur tries and fails at Texas style.

Saigon Grill is fantastic. It's cheap, somewhat healthy, and really really good. They pay their workers slave wages, yes. But you will never leave there hungry or even impoverished. Anytime you see "free saigon grill" advertised for an event, show up.

HamDel is good but Appletree supermarket on 120th & amsterdam has a surprisingly good deli selection. Try the Bronx Bomber or the Amsterdam Hero.

And avoid Strokos, their prices are the most heinous of any deli in the neighborhood because all the doctors at St Lukes are willing to pay whatever. Their pizza is pretty good though, but at $4 for a slice with a few toppings it's just not worth it.
