So am OOS and come from an area that goes absolutely insane for its sports teams(think UMich and Michigan State). I am considering getting football tickets and i was just wondering if it is worth it? A lot of people have told me that sports is not big thing and not that many people participate/get fired up. Is this a fair description?

Totally worth it. The AT&T stadium won’t be as large as the big house in Michigan, but 99 dollars for the whole season is so worth it especially if you know how football is played. (a number of people go there to hang out with their friends than to watch football and some of them don’t even know the rules)

Better not be. I got my season tickets, and I can not freaking wait 'til the season starts. GO BEARS!!!

I will say that a disconcerting number of people on the campus whom I have encountered seem to actually oppose the football program completely, saying that it sucks up money in a time when money is short, and we should scrap it. They don’t realize how many great things the football program brings. The lack of passion that I have found in a lot of the students is just one more reason why I’m starting to wonder if I actually belong at Cal. That being said, I am trying SOOOO hard not to pass judgement based solely upon my experience over the summer. I’m sure that it will be better in the fall, and I’m trying to keep a super positive attitude. I was (and still am trying to be) so excited to finally go to a school where I can be proud and have school spirit. Hopefully there’s more excitement and school spirit when everyone is there during the normal school year.

It’s significantly less worth it this season (only 5 games instead of 7, and you have to travel, no Stanford, no UCLA, no Oregon) than last season, but it’s still worth it.

Plenty of people get fired up though. There are plenty of us that get really excited for Cal football.

The USC game is on a Thursday too… :(

AT&T should be interesting. But Berkeley comes to life on football Saturdays when played at Memorial. Glad they’re finally renovating the stadium.

I love how people always say that the football programs suck up money and yet they fail to realize so much. The profit the football programs at colleges make is incredible. Football pays for almost all of the other sports and gives even more money to the college. The money earned helps everyone at the schools. Football and basketball are money makers for everyone. So help your school and purchase season tickets.

^^they are only cash cows at big universities that actually do well

@singh2010 the oregon game is included fyi

I’m OOS as well and come from a similar place (Florida) where college football is a really big deal. I get season tickets, I think going to the games is a lot of fun, and most people that go get pretty fired up, too. There are plenty of fans with a lot of spirit. The Oregon game last season was so fun, even if we lost. The energy in the stadium was awesome!

That being said, sometimes you’ll meet people on campus that are really just a total DRAG when it comes to college sports. “Noo I can’t go to the game, I have to study/clean/catch up on sleep. I don’t really like football anyway.” UGH! That’s damn near sacrilegious where I’m from. But in my opinion Californians aren’t the best sports fans ever, just in general, so I wasn’t too surprised… ;)

lol. I like football and I like Cal football. I loved going to the games freshman year, too. But this season and last, I didn’t get tickets. I also don’t complain about football sucking up money because I do realize the benefits it reaps. Call me a bandwagon jumper, but I know we’re just not going to be that good even if I hope for it. I’m not taking BART to SF to watch us lose. The best part about gamedays then is gamedays at frats. Not sure how that’s gonna work now…I do buy basketball tickets though!

I’ve already bought my season tickets and I’ll definitely be going to the games, at least the USC game for sure. I’m born and raised in So Cal and have been raised a Trojan fan since I was a kid, even throughout the garbage late 90s. I cheer for the Bears but when the Cardinal and Gold come to town, I change allegiances temporarily :)

@mjmay7, the Oregon game is at Autzen this year, not at AT&T. So it’s not included. We played all the cool teams at home last year (Stanford, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, UCD haha - my home team).

And my chem lab is going to make me late for the USC game hahaha.

UGHUGHUG I just realized the USC game is on a thursday! I have class ugh.

Yeah…I have lab until 6, though I’ll probably try to be done by 5/5:30 and hopefully make it for the second half at least.

@singh2010 Oregon is at AT&T this year…i even checked stubhub to make sure that the cal site had it correct.

i’m probably gonna have to leave class early to make it to the usc game on time :(

Haha yeah, massive difference.

yea i just saw oregon and didn’t see the oregon STATE…my bad

i was excited :(

I have absolutely NO IDEA how football is played but I friggin adore football games hee hee hee…especially when you’re rooting for your own college, it’s gotta be even better!

PS: YEAH, football tickets would be worth it xD

att should be infinitely more comfortable than having to bunch up on those bleachers. Then again, no one ever sits in the student section anyways.
