I have heard differing things about the schedule at beast. I received a typical cadet's day in a mailing from the admissions department but I am referring to when we actually get to go out and be in the field.

Someone told me that for the first 3 weeks or so we are on campus and in barracks and going to classes. Then only the last three weeks are we actually applying what we learned. Is this true?

That's a good way to describe it. The first detail (1st 3 weeks) you'll be learning some basic skills. Then in the 2nd detail, you'll apply the skills. This culminates during the last week field experience that you'll have at Buckner.

Also, you should know that your company cadre will change at the half-way point. That should be a nice day as you'll go to a sponsor's home and it will be the 2nd time you get to call home.

The sample CBT schedule gives a good idea of the summer's format.
All new cadets will take the same courses/activities. However, the dates of the activities will often differ based on their cadet company. Although cadets are in the barracks/garrison the first month, they do far more than "go to classes". A variety of military exercises such as first aid, mountaineering, rifle marksmenship, bayonet assualt, hand grenades, land navigation and warrior competition will take place. However, the cadets will return to WP barracks each evening.

Here's a couple key dates I know about (everything is subject to change):

June 26 (Monday) - R-Day
July 3rd (Monday) - Independence Day Celebration - Laid back day
July 16th (Sunday) - Sponsor visitation. One of the "call home" opportunities.
July 31st (Monday) - March to Camp Buckner. This begins field exercises.
August 7th (Monday) - March back from Buckner.
August 12th (Saturday) - Aceptance Day Parade - Class of 2010

The first three weeks you'll be mainly going to issue points, taking classes, and standing around. You'll go on two-three ruck marches (the 6 miler is by far the worst--straight up the ski slope), and do IMT (individual movement techniques). 2nd Detail is much more fun, and more laid back, too. That's when you'll REALLY get into all the soldier stuff, and when you'll start weapon's immersion (carrying an M16 with you at all times). Wakeup will be at 0520 or earlier every day, and you'll go to bed most nights at 2200. It's the most sleep you'll ever get at West Point.
