For Hotchkiss

My parents just found out about Hotchkiss, and since I'm now in 10th grade, they're CRAZY (literally) about me getting into Hotchkiss but I'm not so sure with my grades.

I have a 98 weighted GPA
My current classes are (and their grades last mp):
Latin 3 (which really should be latin honors, but is not) (A)
English Honors (B+)
Math B Honors (A+)
World History AP (89... SO close)
Architechture (A)
Physics AP (100)

I'm a member of Science Research,
Also of JSA (Junior Statesmen of America)
and to a certain extent, chess (I got several 1st place section trophies in my closet)

I've been playing guitar for several years now,
Play piano (not too well),
I also play golf with my dad every weekend,
And I do 3 hours of community service in my neighborhood every week.

In middle school, I got several awards, including those for
School Service
Meteorology
Math A
and for doing a bio-medical project in collaboration with the hospital on Sleep Apnea.

I know Korean, English, and am learning Japanese and Latin, know very little Chinese,
and I also know some very, very basic German.

My academic history is as follows:
I went to Catholic school as a young child from K-3(and 1 half)
I also went to Korea for a year, starting in 4th grade, ending before 5th (and winning some recognitions on the way)
Came back to America, and entered halfway through 5th grade,
and here I am now.

I've been getting some really disappointing grades last year, and I think my average would be a lot higher if this year's grades were factored in.

Finally, I got a 1900 in the SATs during 8th grade and I got a 210 on the PSATs this year.

Not a lot, but yea...
Any comments?

are u planning to send in the psat scores or are you planning to take the ssat?

it looks pretty good, are you applying to any other schools? hotchkiss is really competitive so applying to a couple others might not be a bad idea, like andover or exeter

I think i'll stick with my PSAT scores.

There are lots of Asian kids who apply to the top schools. When went to my interviews at the top schools a few years ago, the waiting rooms were filled with Asians. As a result you really need to set yourself apart. Your test scores are good but your grades are mediocre. What is your passion? Are you a good golfer? Are you good enough to play for a prep school team? If so, you should contact the coach.

^wowsa is right. i'm korean too and it's going to be tougher for the asians because so many of them have a high caliber. do you have something that sets you apart, like playing the bassoon or something? that would definitely catch the interest of the admissions committee

Hotchkiss has the best Chinese course in the country hands down. For more than 100 years Hotchkiss has brought students from China to the school and there still is a special "Chinese Connection". In fact over 1/4 of all US ambassadors to china went to Hotchkiss (including the current Ambassador). So Old Hotchkiss boys can get the very best Chinese teachers from China to go to Hotchkiss.

Also Due to Hotchkiss' position as the pre-eminent business school in the world many Chinese tycoons have brought their kids to Hotchkiss such as the founder of Ming Cosmetics (who is a Hotchkiss grad), and another Chinese alum who founded CNet.com and download.com .

Many students, both Chinese and a large number of non-Chinese students, are taking the Chinese course. Furthermore there are numerous Chinese and Korean individuals at Hotchkiss. I came from Malaysia myself, and like you did the GCSEs and the IB. I have to say coming to Hotchkiss was the best move of my life. I think that there are more Chinese here at Hotchkiss than at my old international school in Malaysia and Brunei (percentage wise anyways).

Essentially Hotchkiss is a very welcoming place for Asians.

I think you have a good shot of getting in.
