For Notre Dame: Does it matter what "intended major" you mark on your application?

Since all the incoming freshman are enrolled in "general requirement classes" their first two years and then declare a major after that, will it affect our admissions chances if we marked "Letters and Science" as opposed to "Mendoza" (since Mendoza is a prestiguous b-school)?

no, ND says that they accept you to the university and not the particular school - no one knows what happens behind the doors, but this is what they say - they are supposed to just look at the application - they want the best regardless of what you intend to study.

Everyone is admitted to the College of First Year Studies upon admission to the university, unless you are a transfer.

The Observer did have an article that implied there is some sort of quota system. They’re trying to keep the business school enrollment constant (or decrease it slightly) and they want to increase enrollment to the engineering college.

^while this may be their intention, they must also realize that close to 50% of the students will change their major, so quota systems will not be very accurate. Also, people who drop out of engineering usually go to business, so this might also explain why the business school’s numbers rose to high in the first place.
