For people who want to be a doctor, high school barely matters! Quit Worrying!

Hello :) How are you guys doing?

It’s not high school that matters, it’s the habits you develop during high school that matter.

^^ This kid’s not getting into med school.

I might want to be a doctor, but I still want to go to a good school for undergrad, where I can learn whatever I want before I commit myself to a career.

Would you rather get your **** together in HS, and suffer very few penalties, or not give a **** until college, where you run the risk of losing ****?

HS matters for some.

Med Schools will take the 3.9 from UCLA over the 3.1 from Harvard pretty much every time… The habits you develop however will be with you for life

Of course it doesn’t :)

Med school doesn’t matter either…I know someone who is guaranteed a job (doctor training program) at Mount Sinai straight out of college, with no need for pre-med concentration or anything. :P

Well if you want to get in to those super-leet 6-7 year med programs, it does.

^You mentioned one anecdote…one person…I am talking to the mass of people who want to be doctors.

right. IN COLLEGE, they FAIL OUT

That’s irrelevant to what i am talking about. I said the performance of high school is not crucial to becoming a doctor. College performance certainly is. I never denied the latter.

However, I do agree that the habits developed in high school stay throughout life. That certainly is true.

But… performance in HS can be related to work ethic.

How can we say that “work ethic” was the reason those people failed out in college? Too many factors to control for.

And yes alot of people do want to go to a good undergrad but more often than not, they do not plan on becoming a doctor.

^true…so how can you say that people that fail to get into med schools from Duke and vanderbilt do so because they have no “work ethic”?

And by “you” i mean MITHOPEFUL.

Besides, I wouldn’t want to go to Duke/Vandy even if i could get in. The competition is too cut-throat with no guarantee.

^It’s level of competition is on par with that of Duke for pre-med.

Not to mention the money factoring in to this discussion.

I’m not going to comment on the above posts… not interested in college debates.

What kind of doctor do you want to be and why?

neurosurgeon because so many prevalent diseases today are neurological (alzheimers, parkinsons, etc). The brain is the one organ that we know the least of. It’s too awesome to describe :)

^I doubt it. Residency programs for them are extremely cutthroat.
