For Pre-Med

Anyone a current student of pre-med or planning to do Pre-med?

What is the typical schedule like? i see in the freshman questionnaire it says bio is mandatory freshman year? and seminars are not required until Spring?

This is all i have for a basic idea of a schedule:

Calculus
Bio/Chem
Foriegn Language

what else?

I am wondering the same thing. What will your major at LC be?

Natural Sciences, not sure about a minor..maybe math?

I don't think they make us take Chem first semester. In the schedule they might include a core class as well.

yeah thats y i want to know what they are because those are the only ones i can think of...i know were not required seminar until spring right? and also ur right about the chem, the freshman questionnaire says its mandated bio freshman year.

freshman pre-med schedule looks a little something like this.

first semester
Bio and bio lab
Gen chem, chem recitation, chem lab
Comp/Rhet(or freshman lit course)
Philosophy/Theology

Second semester
Philosophy/theology
History
Gen Chem II
Bio II
fresh. eng requirement

at least that was the sched. for class of '11.

Good luck w. premed!! You'll need it.

thanks are the bio labs on LC campus? and does it look bad taking a class in the summer? for ex. chem.

i don't know anything about LC policy with regards to labs..

with regards to chem over the summer.. there seems to be discrepancies between universities. at FU, they say that med schools like to see you under pressure and that they want you to take your science courses during your regular terms... while my friend at tufts says that med schools only care that you take the science courses at the school you go to...
and anyway.. it's highly inadvisable that you take a science course of the summer because an entire semester's worth of info is crammed into one month. you will be stressed out like i don't know what.
if you are talented when it comes to sciences.. then you really don't have much to worry about when it comes to chem.. if you took ap or honors.. first semester will be easy.. second semester is a little tougher though..

Doesnt it suck that Fordham might give us both chem and bio during the same time. I think they wanna kill us lol!
Thanks ilyasaber14!

^i think its only bio though.

if its only bio that would be even better.

why would it be only bio? that doesn't make any sense. you have certain requirements to fill for pre-med. Bio, gen chem, orgo, physics, calc and any other courses i'm forgetting at the moment. since you have orgo sophomore year, you HAVE to take chem freshman year.

^because thats what 2 current pre-med students recently told me

My room-mate was a pre-med student. You have to take one year of general bio and chem (i.e. bio 1,2; chem 1,2), one year of organic chem, one year of Physics, and one year of math. What most students do is, as my room-mate did, is finish the general bio/chem requirements freshman year; fulfill the orgo requirements (which is extremely hard) soph year, and fulfill math/physics requirements junior year, and start preparing for for the MCATs/Med school application thereafter. Good luck!

I would look to take one science class during the summer following freshman year. It's virtually impossible to cope with Bio/Chem (not to mention the labs and recitation that go along with the lectures) and 3 other classes that require you to read and write. This is why many pre-med students flunk out of the program or end up with very poor grades. Right now, GPA should be your only concern. I don't understand how Fordham requires pre-med students to take all these liberal arts requirements.

Getting back to the summer class - Actually compacting the material within 5 weeks may not be that bad since you'd be a lot more focused, not have to be worried about other classes, and would remember everything since it would not be stretched out over 4 months. Also, during the summers, teachers seem to be more lenient and you can probably get a good grade, since you are competing against other students who are also in the same situation as you are (i.e. they probably do not want to be there). Fordham, every summer, during Summer Session I and II, offer Bio 1/Bio 2 or Chem 1/Chem 2 respectively. If I were you, I'd take bio during the school year and chem during the summer.

^ Hey thanks! thats what i was planning..but i was confused as to what other classes i would take. Because the seminars are kind of messing me up...So far i just have whats listed above...

BIO, CALC (though i might take stat because calc is easy for me), Spanish, Probably Philosophy of Human nature (2nd semester becomes critical reading and writing or somethign right)? would that be enough for my freshman schedule?

Also i would not have a problem taking Orgo with Physics (because physics i am 100% sure will not give me any problems), and take Chem over the summer because i want focus on that.
