For the last time, "Penn" is an Ivy League school!

^ LMAO oooo man

lol just say "Upenn"...y say "Penn". Crazy people...crazy

Do you know how much a person can do with all that energy that he/she saves by only saying Penn? Probably run a marathon.

"Upenn" in my experience, at least, results in the same confusion. In fact, if I am not mistaken, the University of Pennsylvania does not like to be referred to as "UPenn" but instead prefers Penn.

The only thing that seems to truly confuse people less often is University of Pennsylvania, and even then people often assume I am referring to a state school in Pennsylvania. Honestly, I don't care what other people think about the college I am at- if that makes me crazy, I guess I am but I think it simply qualifies me as a person who does not care what some random person thinks about the college I attend.

Because "UPenn" is not the name of the school, Penn is.

You are correct.

Bowl games are fun! It's nice to see your school on national TV... even if it loses!

Losing a bowl game hurts, just getting there is hardly "good enough" (they are fun though, and national TV rocks). The same can even be said about Penn's NCAA Tourney trip. The loss hurt, though almost knocking off Texas (in Dallas) was some consolation (and quite exciting). Also Penn football (usually) isn't too shabby. State College is not the only place in PA to watch good college sports. Plus, toast at Beaver Stadium?

haha i heard about that toast thing at the football field...

haha it's funny to find this...I deff. did an overnight visit to Penn State thinking it was the Ivy last weekend..haha
but the state school is really nice, (not that i would ever go there...cuz it's too big) but i'm visiting the real Ivy soon.

well im glad this turned into such a popular post!

"I deff. did an overnight visit to Penn State thinking it was the Ivy last weekend"

LOL I can just picture the moment you asked someone about how it is to be at an Ivy League school heh

wow that just made my day, or morning?

lol well I figured it out about 2 days before I went, I opened my mailbox and I thought "yay my Penn application has arrrived!" and then I notice the DARK blue Penn and the lack of the word state..so then I thought "oh s h it..." but by then I had already paid the fees and the such..so I just went and instead of going to their info sessions I just chillaxed with the parental units around university park...I loved the city. too bad that school is too big.
I'm glad I made your day theworld!
and yes, during the bus ride back, someone asked about penn state's track and when the admissions officer answered the question, the guy that asked the question said something like "ohh...so that's where you do your penn relay (or something like that)" to which the officer replied as he rolled his eyes, "no, that's not us, that's the Ivy league school"

Lmao you really do make me laugh. That is just such a crazy situation.

i like how "upenn" isn't the official name of the school....even though the school website is www.upenn.edu...notice how penn.edu redirects to upenn.edu

How/why aren't they named UPenn tho...I really don't get it

I'm sorry, but if I worked hard enough to get into Penn and I am paying $100K in tuition (not my parents), then I have every right to tell folks it's an Ivy. I could care less if it's pretentious or not.

Technically it isn't pretentious to say Penn is part of the Ivy League as a correction to someone who confuses it for Penn State. It's just a brute fact -- it IS part of the Ivy League. It's only pretentious if you make it that way. Although, I've only had it confused maybe twice in my life, and both times I just said "No, UPenn not Penn State."

"How/why aren't they named UPenn tho...I really don't get it"

They are actually both. They just prefer to be called Penn. I really don't know why and could only speculate. Maybe because it is easier to say or just sounds better.

Today someone asked me where I was looking at for college. I consciously mentioned the University of Pennsylvania (I remembered this thread) instead of "Penn" or "UPenn". Still, she asked me, "Penn State?" She figured it out. No biggie though.

Speaking of being afraid of being pretentious...whenever I say Cornell I say it really fast...for some reason it makes me more comfortable lol

well it's only two syllables. So how much faster can you say it?

Well because if u say it all pronounced and slow it sounds like u r being cocky or pretentious. It's okay tho because most of the time people are like "O, cool", but it's the awkward silences I try to avoid. lol oy
