Why are you interested in it?

I am not a student s I won't comment. I am a 50 year old energy professional; with aMS in Geology ---great life work for both fun and profit

How is it um fun??

You will find most Geoscience professionals like and/or love their jobs. I can speak for the energy side of work, but first the major.

It is the opportunity to unravel a puzzle. How did that mountain get there? YOu look at the type of rock and imagine the environment of the rocks beign deposited, then the type of massive forces that might have pushed it up.. possibly marvel at the order and beauty of crystals or deposits.

In work, all of the above along with the ability to be part of a technical team , bringing your expertise and discussing with engineers what is happening in reservoirs under the ground or where another one might be. The opportunity to work with people from around the world and alll walks of life.

Good money, but expect major ups and down ...

When I get back to college, that's what I want- geology. In fact my plans are not for a mere Bachelor's degree. Not even a Master's. I want a Doctorate, and I want to specialize in sedimentology.

What excites me about it? Gee, I honestly don't know. I really don't. I know that geology itself is very interesting to me. It just "is". But sedimentology? When I look at an igneous intrusive, I have this attitude of "big deal". But when I see an ultra-mafic lamprophere jutting through the Black Hawk formation, I get excited.
When I see a sand bar in the river, I nearly salivate over the chance to dissect that same bar.
When I go gold panning, yeah finding the gold IS nice, but if I find calcite or gypsum or coal, I get excited.
When I am underground and view a milk quartz vein interlaced with gold or pyrite, yeah I get excited. But when I am hiking in a canyon that itself dissects a coal-bearing rock formation, I am even more excited....
...and that excitement goes ten-fold if I get a change to sketch and map it.

Sounds crazy huh?
