I just have to say ... what is going to happen when you put 6000 people aged 18-22 together? There's going to be alcohol and drugs. And I'm a parent who is saying this, and I'm not too upset.

The biggest drinking/party schools are in rural areas. Brown is an urban campus, with frats that aren't particularly active. And sports aren't a big deal on campus, either. Compared to big state schools, the "partying" that happens at Brown must pale in comparison.

Answering your question in #23-- dealing with the drinking on campus is a problem for every college administrator, not just Brown's. There's not enough space here or time in my day to answer the question you posed in #23, but you're not the first to ask it.

Hopefull, if you are that determined to avoid people who drink, then you really need to go to a Christian school. You will find nondrinkers on most campuses, but I really think that wherever you go, there will be students drinking and smoking pot.

If you search the Internet enough, you can find statistics on drinking, and binge drinking, on campuses. I've looked at the studies, and Brown is no where close to some of the big state schools, where a majority of students binge drink a lot.

"dude jason you didn't see the one held in my shoebox of an apartment this year! (transfer orientation)"

and I wasn't invited? Not sure who's worse - you or Jason... haha

I am from Florida and I am going to attend Brown fall of 2009. As far as partying goes, I do not consider Brown to be a party school whatsoever. I know this because Florida has two of the biggest party schools in the country, which are UF and FSU. They party all the time, and even so, many of my friends who go there don't party all the time (as a matter of fact I have a friend who is very religious and has not partied yet, and she loves it there). Brown is a college. People in college party from time to time. Does it mean you have to party with them? No. No one will force you to do anything, it is completely up to you. Now the whole view about how the drinking age is 21 and how drugs are illegal; thats nothing new. That has not stopped people in every college in the nation (except for the Christians schools) from getting drunk. Weed is illegal, people still do it. I dont think the administration has enough time, money, and effort to stop every 19 year old who is drunk and has weed. It is college, you are going to see people getting drunk and people smoking weed. Its a fact. Move past it. If you don't want to see it then you should consider attending a christian school, there are plenty of christian schools who are extremely good.

I have a question. One of my friends (who attends another college) told me that when she shared a dorm room with another girl a few years ago, she would often wake up in the night to hear her roommate, er, getting it on with a boyfriend. Does that happen frequently at most universities? How about Brown? Or is it just one of those rare-case scenarios when you end up with a bad roommate?

Hahaha. That happened to one friend of mine.

That's just a really weird rare-case that can happy anywhere, hardly specific to any place.

For the record, since someone mentioned this earlier-- MIT? Parties. Hard. The kids from schools up in Boston will confirm this--MIT throws the wild parties. I have several friends who go there. I've gone to parties there. It's wild. It's crazy. Ever heard of the Bad Decisions party? The ABC party? etc.

Brown? Brown is milder than MIT. I don't drink and I've never been pressured. It's really easy to go through Brown without drinking or dealing with parties. I've never had to take care of a drunken friend at Brown while out having fun for a night. There are just a lot of other fun things to do. If you want to find a party, you can find it. If you don't want to, you don't. There's everything here----but the idea of us being a party school is ridiculous.

I second justbreathe. If you want acid or pot brownies, the only school in Boston where you're guaranteed to find it is MIT. The parties there can be very crazy.

MIT? Are you kidding me?

::shrugs::

Pot brownies are easy to find anywhere. MIT was not all that wild when I stayed there for a weekend with friends, but I'll take the Boston kid's word for it.

Yea I live in Boston, and MIT is known for throwing wild parties! They party and study hard lol. Most of the people that attend are from other Boston schools ive heard. That was one of the reasons i wanted to :)

I've been to a few MIT parties and they weren't totally over the top, although I do enjoy them alot. Their frats have some very very nice houses.

uhhhh it rains cocaine at brown. CASE CLOSED.

LOL.

In four years at Brown I've never seen coke here, and believe me, it's not that my eyes are closed.

LAConfidential, where do you go to college?

Brown is not a coke school. I've seen it only once before, when I was with two kids from Cornell. They were extremely wealthy, though; I don't think that it's the norm there, either.

I've heard of a couple of people doing coke but never seen this happen.

My cousin goes to Brown. At Christmas, he told me that he went to Brown and became a herbivore. When I said, "Huh?" he replied, I'm a herbivore because I subsist primarily on herb -- you know, weed!" He partied some in high school but he wasn't a stoner or anything. But he is now. He's a big stoner. He claims to smoke dope every day. I can't know if he's being honest, but that's what he claimed. He also said that he's smoked pot openly on campus several times and no one says anything. He didn't mention coke.

1) Using dope for marijuana is weird -- dope is heroin.

2) Pot is pretty frequently used around campus. Less than drinking, but still fairly prevalent. However, it's most prevalent freshman year and less prevalent later, in my experience. It's not much different than high school in terms of level of use, again, in my experience.

3) Walking around with a Michael Phelps style bong pipe is not going to go over well. If you were smoking a spliff, however, it's unlikely anyone is going to go and stop you. That being said, the only times I've ever seen anyone smoking pot very openly in public were on 4/20 and at the Spring Weekend concert outdoors.

4) Brown doesn't police the dorms for alcohol and pot violations.

i don't mind...AT ALL. but i would love to get in first. i don't know what to think

1 Why do people make such a big deal about weed when alcohol is considered to be okay.

2 Brown might bust you for weed or alcohol if they are lying around your room during room inspections depending on who is inspecting. They (I used to do this) will mark the presence of alcohol if it is in plain sight no matter whose room it is.

muerteapablo, the kids at cornell are too driven to do coke.
