I'm thinking about going to an out of state university, but I'm not sure what to expect. Following are a list of questions...

Did you go with a friend or solo?
Did you know anyone before going or what the environment was like or was the experience completely new to you?
Did you dorm or live with anyone at first or live on you own?
Any tips or advice for me about surviving out of state?

Thank you!

Pick a college independently! Look at all the possible options know that you’re curious, in AND out of ANY state, cause you have the chance now so don’t miss it! Try to visit the schools (ik it’s hard cause out of state) or at least ask friends/family if they ever went there, read reviews, take online torus or learn about the atmosphere. definitely expand your horizons and look out of state, you may or may not find you end up there

I don’t know what a survey is really going to tell you. Colleges are different and some are more communtiy oriented that others. Some people are more independent than others. Are you talking about public schools only? Many privates require freshmen to live on campus, likely some publics too. So I’ll answer for my daughter’s situation.

solo

knew no one, but sat next to a returning student on the plane when flying in for the first time. Knew what the environment was like from online research only, so experience and going to opposite coast was new.

dorm 2 years, off campus 2 years

no, just make sure it is affordable and that you are okay with coming home less
