For you Prospies: where does NU stand?

This is just completely out of curiosity as a current student at NU.

Where does Northwestern place on your list of colleges?

Is it a realistic first choice, a dream school, or perhaps, a target school you'd be happy to settle with?

Or is it some school you had pretty much no clue about until you scrolled down the US News ranking? Is it a school you applied to because you only apply to the top 15?

How did you heard about it, what do you like about it, what do people think about it where your from?

I know that's a lot of questions, but I'm pretty much asking the same thing over and over again:

Where does NU stand for you? I'm curious to know.

2nd on my list. It's more selective than my top choice school, but if by some strange twist I get in to NU and not my first choice, I think I could still live.

I don't know when I originally heard about it. I think a family member from Chicago was the first to inform me that NU was actually a top-tier school. That kind of piqued my interest, and I knew a lot of friends of mine had interest in it as well. I checked it out, was impressed by what research I did online, and decided it was definitely worth a visit. After the visit, I was pretty much sold.

Around here in Ohio, NU is pretty much top of the top. People here hold it in high regard with Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Notre Dame. It's a midwest thing, I guess (same with ND). People who aren't in academia are more impressed with NU grads than Stanford grads. However, that's likely based on a midwest familiarity.

its #2, but likely to become #1 if i get rejected from my ED school

I hadn't really heard much about Northwestern until I got some mail from them. I found the mail really interesting, then looked into the school and saw that it was a top school. Then, as senior year approached, I wasn't even sure if I was going to apply to NU. Then I visited....it is AMAZING! It instantly became one of my top choices. However, being from NJ, I wasn't prepared to make the commitment of applying ED. However, looking back, I think that I should have, because I love it so much! I hope so much that I get in regular decision!

Basically, I knew nothing about Northwestern except that it was a reputable school. Then I visited the campus while touring some other campuses in the Chicago/Illinois area (particularly University of Chicago and Notre Dame, which don't show up on my list) and it vaulted from being one of those random schools my counselor suggested to my #2 overall.

our campus/location is awesome, isn't it?

One thing I've come to love is that I thought the campus was beautiful when I visited in the spring, thought it was even more stunning in September when I got there, and with each successive season have again been awed by the beauty. Its really unbelievable. And I still don't understand why North campus isn't on the tours- the frat quad in particular definitely has the most "collegiate" feel, followed closely by the Sorority Quad (also not on the tour).

It was my #1 but I guess it was a more realistic #1 than a dream school. I just thought about what I wanted in a school. I don't want to go to a school where I will be a below average student so I applied to Northwestern early instead of somewhere like Princeton(where I have legacy and had a good shot to get into) where I wouldn't be able to stand out. It just made the most sense. In that way, it is the perfect school for me, even though not my dream school

northwestern is probably number 4on my list. being from chicago; i totally think this is by far the best university in the State of illinois. By far...

^ Clearly, NU > UChicago. ;)

They don't put the sorority quad on the campus tours? Why ever not? Talk about one of the prettiest areas on the campus. What are they thinking?

Do they make an effort to steer prospies away from the ugly new buildings?

Also, what's going on with the Annie May Swift renovation?

Annie May Swift looks like it should be done by the time we get back from break, as does Crowe Hall. The tour I took started in Norris, went out through the Arts circle, down sheridan aroudn through the Arch, through the rock pavillion, North to see Annie May Swift and Deering Field, then went through the Library pavillion and back in to Norris.

Maybe they don't want the tours to cross Sheridan Road for fear of getting hit? (Not that that is a real possibility, for any lurkers.) Scott Hall / Cahn Auditorium on into the sorority quads just "shows" really nicely, and as a bonus you can see where some of the dorms, eg. Allison and Willard and the Mid-Quads.

Do they show any dorms on this tour? Do they show the new fitness center? You young-uns don't remember when those of us who wanted some exercise did aerobics on the not too forgiving floor at Blomquist, or sweated with the football team at Patten, or went to the Nautilus in Evanston ...

For me it depends on a lot of things, including just getting in, (chances are against me unless the adcoms hear me through for my schedule) the financial aid I get and if my family ends up moving to Illinois or not. (That's the reason I started looking at NU in the first place!)

No dorms Pizzagirl, though you can arrange overnights. And nothing on North campus, so no SPAC. And I hardly make that trek anyway, South campus denizen that I am- I go to Bloomquist for my (rare) excercise.
