Fordham EA Class of 2020 Discussion Thread

Is housing application available once we submit our deposit? Is this first come first serve? If it is I’ll submit my deposit ASAP. I’m interested in Loyola and Queen’s Court.

I spoke with the financial aid office Friday - they told me the EA fin aid awards are down for now on the portal but should be back this week.

Does anyone know what textbooks are required for every Freshman at Fordham? I would like to do some preview during the summer.

@Fiona1997 You can’t buy books until you get your schedule of classes/professors. There will be plenty of time to get books at the bookstore, order them from amazon etc.

Still cannot access financial aid. It was taken down last Friday. Anyone else in the same situation?

@emsschulz Same here. I was really hoping to find out before I visited too.

Sammmmme. No FA is available. I emailed them early this week - no response.

My real concern is, how are we supposed to move into NYC? It seems impossible to drive into the city.
I’ll be going back to Beijing for summer vacation and it is most likely that I’ll fly to NYC from Beijing myself. Don’t know where and when to do my college shopping and how to move into college… can any parents help?

@Fiona1997, I honestly don’t understand your concern, being a person who’s lived in both NYC and Beijing, I can tell you that the traffic is pretty much the same (if not, worse in beijing). Ofc your parents can help you move in your stuff, but in all honesty, you’re in college!! all it takes is go on google maps and find the nearest IKEA, also there are facebook groups for fordham students to sell their second hand stuff…

@Fiona1997 - will you be attending Rose Hill or Lincoln Center? Either way, there is a move in day for incoming Freshmen.

What you can do is this: Go to Bed Bath and Beyond’s website and search for Fordham. If I remember correctly you can order stuff online and they will do what is called a “pack and hold” and you can pick it up at the store closest to your campus. Then if you want, have things shipped to you at school (not too big of course because you will have to carry it back to your room).

I am a native NY’r. I lived in Manhattan until I was 14 and then I moved to the Bronx, about 25 minutes away from Fordham U. The first time I ever drove to Fordham was on move in day for my daughter. I knew how to get there by bus, had no clue by car. Just plug 2853 Southern Boulevard into your GPS and take exit 7W on the Bronx River Parkway and it takes you right to the gate. You will be directed which way to go according to your assigned dorm. The email they send will give you a time slot to arrive, this way not everyone is showing up at once. It’s very easy, they know everyone is nervous and excited. The orientation leaders for New Students Orientation (NSO) are there every step of the way. When you get to whatever dorm you are assigned (and here’s the BEST part), the members of NSO will announce your arrival (Everyone welcome Fiona, yay!!!) and then they unload your vehicle and move it into your room. That’s why you need to label (and Fordham will send you a detailed email about this) all of your boxes and stuff with your name and room number. When your vehicle is unloaded, you will go to the desk and “check-in”, while the person you are with will park the car in the parking garage. If you are the only one, then once you get your key, park the car in the garage and get back to the dorm. Everything will be in your room and now it’s time to set it up!

I’m not familiar with the move in guidelines for LC, but it’s pretty much the same. Freshman housing is in McKeon Hall I believe (I only know McMahon from summer housing) and they know driving in Manhattan can be a nightmare and they will make sure things go smoothly. You arrive at your assigned time slot and unload the car. I’m sure the email they send also has parking details at nearby garages. Hopefully a LC parent (or parent of alum) can help with info.

There are move-in videos online (go to Fordham’s YouTube channel) and I believe they’re on the school’s website also so you can see what actually happens on move in day!

Over the summer, you will receive emails regarding your housing choices, classes you like. You do not choose the dorm/classes freshman year. Sometime in late July/early August (yes it’s late, this is a sticking point for many people getting stuff and coordinating with room mates) you will get an email saying where you will be living and who your roommate is (with email) so you can contact them to coordinate items.

I cried my eyes out. When I got to campus I was crying (Poor Fr. Quinn did his best to make me laugh. It worked. But I was still a puddle.) when I drove to the garage I was crying. When I walked back to Martyr’s Court I was a bit better but I cried my eyes out on the drive home later that afternoon. I still have my water bottle.

@MomTheChauffer thank you for the very detailed reply! I’ll be at Rose Hill a week prior to the orientation because I have an international student meeting. I’ll need to find a hotel room when I arrive since I’m not allowed to move in on the day I arrive (at least I don’t think so…). I wonder if there is a shuttle bus driving between the airport and the school. On the website it says all the international students will have a chance to shop for their dorm supplies on the first day of the meeting, but it doesn’t say if the school will provide transportation and helpers. I guess I’ll have to email the school about this.
Also about dorms and roommates, I thought there are housing application and roommate assignment? I know people apply to Queen’s Court or Loyola and they meet roommates on a FB group…
And uh I wish I could choose the classes… Already find courses that I’m interested in!

@Fiona1997 - About housing: You will have to fill out the housing application and note your preferences. ResLIfe will take it all into consideration and will notify you during the summer your housing and room mate(s). Loyola is (I believe) the main housing for those who want to take the Manresa program. That should be on the housing application also. Do a little research and see what exactly that entails since my daughter was not part of it (but she had friends who were during freshman year when it was in Martyr’s Jogues) and see if that is something you would like to do.

You will need to contact ResLife and see what exactly they do for internationals in regards to supply shopping/airport pickup. I will tell you this, there is a Target about 20 minutes away on West 225th Street (between Broadway and Bailey Avenue) across from the Marble Hill Houses and you can take the #9 bus right there. (Wish that shopping area was there when I was living in that neighborhood!) There is also lots of shopping on Fordham Road. But please contact ResLIfe in regards to what exactly they do for internationals, because I really don’t know.

Your first semester classes will most likely be Comp II, Faith and Critical Reason, Understanding Historical Change and possibly a foreign language (please tell me you speak Mandarin, because if you test out of it, then you won’t have to worry about that!) and maybe a math (Finite) and maybe Philosophy of Human Nature. These are all Core classes. The questionnaire they send out asks what subjects you like and your preferences. My daughter loves history so of course she had Understanding Historical Change: American History her first semester.

@MomTheChauffer thank you so much! This is very helpful!

I read here on CC that the roommate notifications come really late in the summer, which is extremely annoying to new freshman since most schools do it early.

Also, the school chooses your classes for you first term which can be annoying too.

@suzyQ7 - My daughter wasn’t happy about that either. All of her friends had their classes and roommates early on. I think things may have gotten better, but we didn’t know anything until early to mid August. Then the frenzy of buying things happened. We knew she needed bedding and other items but it was larger items we weren’t sure of until she knew her roommate and they could coordinate. Looking back at last years threads one dad complained back on August 11th that they still hadn’t heard about roommates/dorm info. It is very frustrating, but you just need to get the basics (they are listed somewhere in the housing info page on the Fordham.edu website) and get that stuff for now.

And only your Fall semester classes are done for you. After that you will be able to register for classes for the rest of your time at Fordham.

One quick addition to the comments above. There is time to meet with your dean during orientation to make changes to your first semester schedule if that is needed/appropriate.

Yes, I had forgotten to mention that, thank you @spirit77. My daughter did just that when she took one look at her schedule when she was initially in prehealth and changed it right away. Did it all during orientation so she was set when classes started.

My son just found out that he got if off of the wait list. Unfortunately they didn’t give him any aid other than a $7,500 grant so definitely a no go. He is 100% committed to Ohio State anyway but would of been nice to consider it if the money worked out.
