Does anyone know if freshman athletes are roomed together? If so, what dorms are the athletes assigned to? If not, what are the best freshman dorms?
Athletes are generally assigned fellow team members as roommates. It is possible to request someone else, I have known athletes from different sports asking and then being assigned to room together. It helps to have your roommate also getting up early for practice, and needing sleep at night after hard workouts. The main freshman dorm is Loschert, although there are other dorms housing freshmen.
Can anyone recommend what dorm to request for freshman housing and why?
Loschert and South are nice sized rooms, if they triple up, it’s not too crowded. Elevator buildings. No AC.
Queens Court - Average sized room, ok if they triple up. Nice programming for residents. It’s the “substance free” dorm, so…there’s that. Some abide by that rule, some don’t. Also known as the “nerdy” dorm, but every one of my daughter’s friends who lived there were anything but “nerdy”. I can’t remember if there was an elevator, but there is AC.
Loyola, aka “The Hotel Loyola”. Home of the Manresa Program. This quickly knocked Queens Court out of the top spot of THE DORM. Rooms are roomy enough if they triple up. And most (if not all) rooms the past couple of years they tripled. Elevator, AC.
Martyr’s Court. Typical dorm sized rooms and if they triple up, you better really love your room mates. Tight, if tripled. Not too bad if standard double. No elevator. There is AC. My daughter had the pleasure of living here for two years and every summer session. She deserves a medal.
There are pictures and descriptions on the Fordham website. Read and look. Hopefully you even got to tour them when you visited.
^^My S was in Queens Court (loved it). No elevator and no a/c when he was there – but pictures do show window a/c units – just not sure if the units are in all rooms. Some rooms have private bathrooms. He liked the activities at the dorm (some had mandatory attendance) and I think he took one or two classes in the dorm as well. It does have a fantastic study room. It was a good place for him but probably not for everyone.

My daughter is an incoming freshman. We will most likely fly out to NY in August. Does anyone have advice on shipping her stuff out, ordering and shipping to the dorms, etc?? Just interested to see what most faraway students do.
Thanks!
We sent our DS across the continent with 2 suitcases, and a plan to order what he needed. It worked very well. Packages can be sent to the mailroom so they are ready when your student arrives. Bring a lamp for the first night - the dorms in Loschert have only a ceiling light near the hall door. He had sheets, a light fleece blanket, towels, and a fan (necessary if no AC in the room!), plus a first aid kit, and normal travel sundries. Computer, a surge protector and charging cords are needed, of course.
Amazon prime was great for pillows, supplies, books, etc. He made an Uber trip to Target for hangers, a chair and mirrors, I ordered rugs and a closet organizer from Ikea to be shipped to the mail room.
The US Post Office has free 2-day Priority boxes flat-rate that have extremely high weight allowances. (Be sure to get the boxes marked FLAT RATE!) They come in medium and large in two shapes- .but you have to order the large flat size (“game sized” 12x24x3 which comes in packs of 25 for free from USPS.com) to send large flat items. The large is $18.90 with with whatever you can stuff in it.
There is a Costco within bus distance, but it’s not easy with big packages, and Uber can’t pick up in front. There is a BJ’s that is easily bus accessible (Take the Bronx 9 bus (Bx9) from Fordham Road and Bathgate Ave). We didn’t order from Bed Bath and Beyond, but that is an option. Plan out what is available, but wait till they get into their room to order - space can be limited and that will determine their needs. It will both save money and time!.
Hotels - since there weren’t any great choices near Rose Hill campus, when we visited we stayed near Grand Central Station, and took the safe and fast Metro North train and got off at Fordham Road Station - right next to the University’s main gate on Fordham Road.
Coordinating with your roommate is also a good idea. Our son had the unlimited food plan, so never needed a refrigerator, nor did his roommate. He had (but didn’t really need) a printer they shared. No microwaves are allowed in the freshman dorm rooms, but there is a communal one on each floor.
@watty89, my daughter is just finishing her freshman year and we live in SoCal. The two of us flew out with 2 suitcases and 3 of the ziptop IKEA duffel bags. We stayed in a hotel about 10 minutes from campus and had a rental car. We spent Saturday making a Target, Container Store and Bed Bath and Beyond run. We had done some of the Buy and Hold stuff for BBB from home, but then added some things and didn’t buy everything on our list. D had coordinated with her roommate, who brought a rug and we bought a dorm refrigerator at Target. I had rented a small SUV and that thing was packed to the roof for move in Sunday. When I visit, I stay in Manhattan, but for move in and the day before, I did not want to deal with a car in the city.
Thanks for all the great advice… so appreciate it!
