Fordham Rose Hill Martyrs' Court

My son was assigned to Martyrs’ Court for freshman year. He knows it has the smallest rooms and maybe isn’t the top choice but he’s pretty adaptable.

We’re trying to figure out what we should bring for storage. We found some pictures and it looks like the beds are slightly elevated. I think I read that risers cannot be used so is there enough room under the beds to store things? Anyone have suggestions on what sort of storage would be best?

Is a fan necessary since there is AC in Martyrs’ court?

Hello @ggghfdgggggf!

You won’t need a fan. One less thing to worry about. The beds are raised, they don’t use risers. It’s the framework that holds the mattress that can be raised. Just put in a work order to facilities and they will send someone to raise it more if needed. But there is room for storage containers. I used the kind with the drawers (two drawer) and that was enough.

Each room has a bed, desk w/chair and wardrobe. The wardrobe has a shelf on top and drawers on the bottom There was only one bookcase to be shared.

We also used a smaller container with a lid for snacks, flat storage w/wheels (it’s a long one) for printer paper, cold medicine, other toiletries.

I’m wracking my brain trying to remember what we got year to year (she lived there for two years and three summer sessions) and she deserves a medal for having lived there that long. Sophomore year she got a fridge but it didn’t fit under the bed because it was too tall, so it went next to the book case (she had a single due to Post Housing Lotto). Her friend had a fridge that did fit under the bed. We didn’t bother with a TV, everyone just watches Netflix or goes to the lounge.

Hope this helps and let me know if I can answer other questions. Welcome to the Ramily!

Thanks so much MomTheChauffer!

We found some pictures on line and it looks like there is some sort of table next to the beds. This appeared to be in addition to the desk. We’re trying to figure out if he’ll have a surface next to his bed for a lamp or maybe he should get a clip on lamp?

You mentioned printer paper, did you bring a printer?

Right now he’s planning to just get the essentials and then buy/order anything we did not think of. Did you use Amazon etc for extra purchases or shop around school?

I really appreciate your help, first one off to school so all new to us!!

@ggghfdgggggf

What you see next to the bed is most likely the bookcase. What my daughter did was she put the printer in the wardrobe. She had a small lamp for the desk.

Across the street on Fordham Road is Fordham Plaza and there is a TJ Maxx. Up the street there is a Best Buy that is right next to the Walgreens. On the corner of Fordham Road and Webster Avenue is a Burlington Coat Factory. These are usually places some go to for extras. You can hop on the #9 bus to Target, that is about a 20 minute bus ride (take the bus going in the direction of W262 Street or the “City Line”. No too sure where the stop is, but it will be on the same side as Fordham, don’t cross Fordham Road). There is also some sort of Macy’s outlet that sells home stuff. That’s near Walgreen’s I believe. Wished all that stuff was there when I was growing up in the Bronx!

We did order stuff through Amazon. But I also live an hour away (Bronx native) so we had the luxury if something was needed I was able to bring it down. My first time ever driving to Fordham was move in. I had no idea how to get there by car as I always knew what bus to take.

We also found this medal tray with clamps that she clamped to the mattress frame and that held her iphone and a small book. Can’t remember where we found it, but it was a good thing for her. Had it since Junior year.

Also---------word of advice-------during move in after you drop off your vehicle and your son has done check in, TAKE PICTURES. The volunteers will have already brought all the belongings to his room, so try to get as many pictures as you can to show what the room looks like NOW. If there are any marks, dents, holes, get a picture of it and make sure when the RA does a walk through anything out of the ordinary is marked down on the Room Condition Report. This way when he moves out in May and they try to say that there was something there that wasn’t there on move in, you have proof and you won’t be charged. Any damage done during the year, try to get facilites to get it fixed asap. This way you’re not charged.

I know you have a boy, but it’s good to get a full length mirror. That can hang on a wardrobe door.

During Thanksgiving Break facilities comes around and removes the AC.

Also, during Spring Weekend you might want to invest in ear plugs. Saturday morning, 8AM, band usually does sound check. No matter which way the room faces, he will hear it.

If you ship stuff to him, keep in mind the distance between McGinley and Martyr’s. It’s bit of a walk, especially if you are lugging stuff.

Get a mattress pad. It makes the bed more comfortable. A bulletin board (maybe combo bulletin/white board) to hang over the desk. Use Command Strips.

If I think of anything else I’ll let you know. Let me know if you think of anything else.

This is so great…can’t thank you enough.

How nice for your daughter to have the inside scoop on the Bronx!

I’m sure we’ll have more questions…
