Fordham vs Emerson

Hey, so I'm just curious to see what people have to say regarding Fordham when compared to Emerson. I'm very interested in studying communications and marketing. With that said, which school would be better for that? Can anyone give some pros and cons of each?

Thanks!! :)

The oppotunities are endless at Fordham due to its prestige and it’s proximity to NYC. The acedemics there are rigorous and employers hold Fordham degrees to a high stature. Fordham would be an excellent choice for the field you’d like to get into

Awesome. Thanks for replying! A big concern for me is the weather. I’m from Miami FL and usually the coldest it ever gets here is about 70 degrees (67 if we’re lucky). How is the weather like in Boston and NYC? Is it pretty much the same in both cities?

Also… what are the students like? Who has more school spirit? What about the locations of the schools… whats that like? Any thoughts?

Weather in both New York and Boston are similar. 20’s to 40’s Dec to March with occasional single digits and rare 50 degree day. Boston has a bit more wind. Definitely not South Beach, but then again the change of colors going on presently can’t be matched with any palm trees.

The Versailles Restaurant on Calle Ocho or Bongos on Ocean Drive can’t hold a candle to Dominicks on Arthur Avenue or the 1,000’s of amazing restaurants throughout New York City. Holidays in New York City? Lets just say that Ocean Drive, Sawgrass Mall or Bal Harbour are childs play to 5th Avenue, Rockerfeller Center and Times Square.

Bayside vs South Street Seaport? Brooklyn Bridge is our backdrop

Central park vs Haulover park?

Broadway vs Lincoln Road?

Bronx Zoo is across the street, as is the Botanical Gardens.

100’s of museums in midtown are 20 minute Ram Van ride away.

“Worlds Most Famous Arena” Madison Square Garden

Yankees vs Marlins? need I say more?

Fordham Football is 7-0 and enjoying the best season in 80 years. Standing room only crowds at every home game. To my knowledge Emerson does not have a football team.

$200-240 roundtrip Miami or Fort Lauderdale to JFK, LaGaurdia, Newark or WhitePlains

Miami is an awesome city. Great Vibe, Food, Night Life, Weather ect… but all on a smaller scale then NYC.

Trust me, you won’t be disappointed with Fordham!

Haha thanks for giving me a better idea of Fordham, blueshirtsrule. I’m going to visit both Emerson and Fordham next month… So I’ll see everything for myself. One of the big things I’m gonna be looking at is the dorms… Those will be huge factors.

I’m going to be in Boston for 2 days and NYC 2 days. Any restaurant suggestions close to the colleges??

Dominick’s on Arthur Avenue is walking distance for legit Italian.

Havana Central in Times Square for authentic Cuban.

Enjoy your visits

I am a student at Fordham - Rose Hill and my aunt is a prof. at Emerson. Based on what I know and on what I hear from her, there will be definite differences between the two schools.
-Fordham is a Jesuit school and has a structured core curriculum. I enjoyed most of my core classes and love that I am getting a well rounded undergraduate education but others I know wish the core was smaller.
-Fordham has some great opportunities for communications majors. A good friend of mine is getting great experience working on the radio station.
-Fordham RH has a traditional campus where Emerson doesn’t. Fordham RH is a subway/RamVan/train ride away from Manhattan but it is quick and easy to get there. For me it is the best of both worlds. If you are interested in Fordham- LC that is in the middle of Manhattan at Lincoln Center. You may want to visit both campuses when you are in NY.
-Emerson sounds like the school has an “artsier” vibe in general – the school specializes in communication and performance arts. Fordham will have a more diverse, and likely a somewhat more conservative (although I don’t consider the student body as a whole conservative) group of students.
-You should check out the facilities at both schools for your area of interest.
-Both schools have many study abroad options.
-Weather will be cold in either city – Boston is typically a bit colder/snowier.
-Two of my favorite Arthur Ave. restaurants near campus are Michelangelos & Marios
-I’ve had fantastic dorms at Fordham. There is only one not so hot dorm on campus (Martyrs) and the rest are very nice. Fordham LC has a high rise apartment which has all apartment style dorms.
Enjoy the visits.

I don’t know anything about Emerson, but my daughter is a comm major (theater minor) and is loving the comm classes. Classes are taught by real, working in the field, professionals. The class she is taking now, the prof worked for 60 Minutes and now works for Al-jezera America. I don’t know if you get that anywhere but at a school in NY.
There are so many classes she wants to take that she’s worried about fitting them all in. So, I’d have to say, it’s a great place to be a comm. major.

Thank you guys for all the info! I’m starting to like Fordham more and more every time haha… I just really hope I can get in !

Emerson is a very good school in Boston with strong arts and media courses. A much better comparison might be to Pratt or Parsons School of Design. Fordham is a full featured university while Emerson is specialized. Having said that, marketing is a business field and communications is a Fordham strength. Fordham has the full collegiate experience with a green gothic campus, full dorm life and D-1 sports. Emerson is in downtown Boston and has a feel closer to NYU.

Visit both to see what you think

Does Fordham still have its own radio station?

Sure does. You can find it at 90.7 FM or check them out on wfuv.org
