I have recently gotten into fordham gabelli school of business and university of washington foster school of business. I don't know which school to attend to study finance. Any suggestions? Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you live? What do you want out of college experience? UW is the quintessential granola crunching and sports haven public school…outstanding programs…but very big. Seattle and New York are very different.

Fordham is a Jesuit school. Its liberal arts core curriculum is very special. Gabelli is a phenomenal school with new digs…a NYSE trading floor in the lobby. Fordham is sports challenged and yet still fun. The opportunities that Gabelli gives to its BEST students are unparalleled. There is nothing UW can do to match that, except perhaps a good line of internships at Boeing, MSFT etc. Fordham internships are primarily on WallStreet. If you are a native of Seattle perhaps New York would be a great change of pace and introduce you to the ways of the East…open doors for you. A completely different way of life and perspective.

If you come to Fordham come prepared to work your behind off. Its NOT a slacker school. You will be supremely challenged and earning an A is often difficult. You will have plenty of competition.

Its also expensive. UW, if you are instate, is a real bargain. But you will be among the tens of thousands going there. You have to decide what you want.

Fordham is very special…and very demanding. Congrats on both your admissions. Good luck.

I live in socal, and for my college experience, i want a school that provides me with a lot of internships but also a place thats friendly, and doesn’t have dickhead students…so i can actually have a social life. How hard is fordham gabelli school of business? and I do not understand the whole “jesuit” situation. what makes that a great liberal art core cirric? Is fordham more recognized in the east coast? None of my friends and teachers have even heard of it here.

Not sure how to take your comments (and language). There are 28 Jesuit colleges in the United States. All of them have storied pasts…and present. Many of them huge in basketball. Only a few have football. BUT…its not a school for those who want to spend time in frats, drinking and partying and going to huge football stadiums, if that helps.

Fordham is an academic school. The Jesuit ethos and ethics are fundamentally tied to excellence in academics, as well as values. Google Fordham and look at its amazing list of alumni. Some of them notorious…hehe.

You dont have to be religious or catholic to attend Fordham and frankly its not a religious school in that sense. They have a stellar theology department…world reknown. Contrary to conventional wisdom, history, philosophy and theology are not slacker departments and majors. They are rigorous and demanding. But that is what rounds out all Fordham students, including those at Gabelli who take the common core curriculum. (Its good for you!).

Gabelli will get you connected to all the major IB firms on WallStreet…IF you perform. Competition on wallstreet is beyond fierce, including the Ivy League…so you must do well to get hired. Fordham faculty are approachable and serve as excellent mentors. You wont have a freshmen chemistry class or biology class with 300 people like you might get at UW. You will have a class of 30 or less.

Fordham kids have a good time…lots of fun, lots to explore. A growing contingent comes from SoCal. And the cream rises to the top.

Gabelli is hugely respected, but its also a lot of work. Fordham has a campus in Beijing. I knew about kids in my daughter’s class who went to Beijing, and also to Barcelona…one of whom is now at Goldman Sachs.

Fordham gives you depth of knowledge, depth of character and an unbelievable opportunity. IF you come to work hard, play hard and find the magic to getting it all done on a very busy schedule.

Fordham kids are tight. They go out together…to Little Italy…and to Manhattan. They go on retreats together. They hang together. Are there nerds? Yes. Are there slackers? Yes…and they quickly either fail or end up at the bottom of the class looking for work and wondering what happened?

All of my daughter’s friends were extremely hard workers and it paid off in spades. IT doesnt mean they didnt have fun. Two of the boyfriends in their clan were Gabelli Honors. Got it? They are all friends still today. (And dating the same people.)

You will find jerks and fools at every college. Ignore them. Find people like you who want to perform, work hard and then have a good time when its time to relax…without incident, drunken fits and other problems.

Fordham has honor societies…not sororities and fraternities. If you want Greek Row, then go to UW.

You must go to a public high school. Fine. So did my daughter, though we are catholic. Vince Lombardi went to Fordham. Does that help?

People “in the know” know that Fordham is a stellar university in the heart of New York and offers you a gothic campus, gorgeous dorms and a complete college experience at Rose Hill…while being urban and introducing you to life in the Big Apple.

Embrace the Bronx. Its got a LOT to offer. (USC is in the Watts, don’t forget).
UW is a fine school…with many fine fine departments. But its HUGE. And its a lot of frats and sororities and lots and lots of football. Seattle is gorgeous…can’t compete with that. But we can offer you something very very special. I can assure you a Fordham degree is valued and EMPLOYERS know who we are. And frankly at job search time, throughout your career…you will stand OUT…instead of being one of bazillions from xyx state college. That counts for something.

Fordham has stories that are amazing. Including being a favorite site for movie filming. Google it.

Mario Gabelli gave us the money for a reason. And that speaks volumes! (Fidelity Funds).

Being from SoCal, I can assure you that its an amazing opportunity, if you come to learn and work hard. No, its not the same as State Univ, with football as a central part of its identity (though Fordham’s is not exactly impoverished).

Its what do YOU want out of a true college experience? Come East and work? or go to Greek Row? your choice.

Again, UW is a fine school…and I commend it. Congrats. But its a fundamentally different experience there, than being in New York at Fordham.

Btw, we are NOT New Yorkers and we live 9 hours SOUTH of NYC. My daughter was a classic workaholic and sheltered kid with 9 APs in a public school…totallyh prepared academically but not so well prepared for the New York experience. That took time…and a LOT of coaching and comforting. She blossomed and finished Phi Beta Kappa. If she can do it, so can you. Got it pal?

Hey hey hey I’m from SoCal too! PV woooooo

But seriously, as sovereign gets around to saying, you’re looking at two good but different schools. Seattle isn’t a global headquarters like NYC is, but both cities would have good internships. There are sports scenes and party/drinking scenes at both schools–you don’t need frats to have a good time. One major difference might be in how easily you can get around: I’m convinced NYC has the best public transportation in America, and at any rate there’s so much to do in the city that you’ll never wish you had a car. I’ve never been to Seattle, but I get the feeling it’s more of a driving city.

I don’t think Fordham’s core or business curricula are significantly easier or harder than other universities’. But back in the day, the Jesuit “ratio studiorum” was well-known for quality and consistency among the many Jesuit secondary and tertiary schools. University administrators have tried to preserve the depth and breadth of the old-school Jesuit core, and to a large extent they’ve succeeded, even though there’s still a lot of flexibility regarding what courses can be used to satisfy each of the core requirements.

Fordham is best known among Catholics, lawyers, and Northeasterners. Talk to someone from either of the first two groups and you’re likely to get, “Oh, that’s a great school;” talk to someone from the third and you’ll hear about how it’s a solid school one notch below Tufts, Rochester, etc. in prestige. On the flip side, people here don’t know or care about Cal, and one [admittedly super-Catholic] guy from Michigan was genuinely surprised when I explained to him how Stanford is more prestigious than Notre Dame. Few names–arguably only HYPM–carry the same weight nationwide. And we have a good local reputation in the Northeast and a good national reputation among Catholics and lawyers (Fordham’s law school is highly ranked).

A warning, though: to the uninitiated, people from the Northeast can seem like d***heads across the board. Lots of gentry liberals here, and social interactions are subtly different, more cliquish maybe. People are less likely to go out of their way to be friendly. Living here would be good for stepping outside of your geographic comfort zone, while you might click better with UW kids.

I was wearing my Fordham Tshirt and hat on the beach in South Carolina a few years ago and I was approached or given a thumbs up by about 50 people. People know Fordham!

One more thing…New Yorkers entertain in local bars and restaurants…whereas Southerners, Westerners and Mid Westerners often entertain in their homes. A not so subtle difference. Its not that New Yorkers are being rude, its just their culture and the reality that getting from Queens to Bronx is not always so easy, and people live in Apartments, or those who live on Long Island are a good distance away. etc.

But the cultural differences are to be embraced. If you are outdoors oriented for hiking or skiing or whatever, there are plenty of people at Fordham who do the same…you just have to look for them. Also intramural sports are big at Fordham…especially in basketball and soccer. Dorm clubs. Lots of fun.

you guys seem you really know about fordham. Then, can you tell me what is the difference or what made it unique from NYU and Columbia which is also in NYC, the city? Not saying that fordham is not prestiges, but what is the reasons at the back that fordham is less well-known as the other two schools? Also, business in Gabelli is one of the top in fordham undergraduate, but how is it when compare to the business program in NYU? What could be the unique point the fordham undergraduate can beat those of NYU undergraduate or even columbia’s?

You have to search undergraduate business schools in USNWR. And then go online to Fordham’s website and look at Gabelli, the programs, the faculty credentials.

Comparing schools is a bit hard to do…its really about your impressions when you visit and ask around.

Fordham is Jesuit, Catholic and offers a fabulous broad based undergraduate experience.
