First generation American
Father is an alumni at University of Michigan

SATs: 1450 SAT (520 reading/420 math/510 writing.)
790 US History, 740 Literature
GPA: 3.7
Top 15% in my class

I am currently on a program called the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange. This is basically a scholarship run by the Department of State, where I had to submit an application, go through interviews to be able to go on an exchange year abroad in Germany, all expenses paid for. This explains my absence of AP classes, and my English scores. My math has always been pretty bad.

Extracurriculars:

Academic Team
semi-professional Paintball team
Helped start a scout troop
Several car clubs
Auto racing

Random factoids:
-Only one AP class: AP European History with a 3 on the test.
-I will be applying to ROTC in all of these.

App-related info:
- Intended major: Not sure, but I will take a minor in German.
- I am an incredibly talented writer, but since I've been making the transition into German culture through my exchange program, that has slowly degrading. I will be taking the SAT in June, as well as in October before I apply to colleges.
- I will be applying to NROTC, ROTC, and AFROTC

Schools I want to apply to:

Wake Forrest
New York University
University of Virginia
University of Hawaii
University of Southern California
University of Michigan
Duke

Are these out of my league? What should I apply for? My SAT score are low because of my immersion in the German language, as well as not having a "real" and "full" education because of my lack of understanding in the first half year.

Your SAT II scores are impressive, but your SAT I scores are a little lackluster, even if you could bump each section up to 550 and up, that would be great. Maybe by the time you apply, you can be within the top 10% of your class, that is also a huge factor for colleges. A lot of the schools you put up would be definitely “high reach” for you. I don’t know of the others, but Duke, NYU, USC, and UMich would definitely be “high reach”… You want a focus in your extracurricular activities, so try to find something which relates to your field! Best of luck :D

The list you’re looking at is pretty comptitive. You definitely need to bump up the SATs to have a better chance at most of these schools (Im not sure about the U of Hawaii). But your day being an alumni should help.

just a note on Duke… if your school offers a lot of AP/Honors classes, they will look down on your GPA because you only took 1 AP class… they prefer students that have challenged themselves yet might have a lower GPA over someone with for ex: a 4.0 GPA but not APs.

That being said, it is also a plus that you have international experience… f all those schools I’d say Duke is the one that is a reach/high reach. The others are all matches. NYU might be a low reach.

AP Euro
AP US History
AP Psychology
AP English 11
AP English 12
AP US Government

I didn’t want to get stuck behind my grade so I took normal US history, without AP in the 10th grade (it’s an 11th grade course). My school in the USA is accepting the English credit here from Germany as well.
