Pretty Crazy Resume. Chance for UCs and Stanford?

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to all this College Confidential stuff so please be patient with me!

I'm from California (about 15 minutes from Stanford) and would love to stay in-state. I'm not really that academic type of person at all so I honestly have really no idea as to what schools I should even be aiming for and what my potential really is. I'm really in need of some direction and your guys' help!

BTW sorry that a lot of information is missing... I'm currently a junior and haven't taken my SATs yet. I'm almost totally without sophomore grades which makes my GPA a bit hard to follow.. Here it goes though!

Ethnicity: Asian
Sex: Male:

SATII: German 780 (unsure of what to take next)
GPA: Freshmen: Weighted - 4.16 Non-Weighted - 3.83 Sophomore: Weighted - 4.0 Non-Weighted - 5.0 (but only because the only class which I got credit for was an online AP Language and Comp. class which was super easy) Junior: Weighted - 4.6 Non-Weighted - 4.0
APs: Haven't taken any yet... Planning on taking Language and Comp. + Spanish 4 this year
Class Rank: No Idea Lol

ECs:

Studied Abroad:

Studied abroad in Germany as a Rotary Exchange Student during my Sophomore year. Was the youngest kid in my exchange student group which was also the biggest in the entire year. Went to two different schools there, lived with two different host-families, learned both fluent German and Spanish (my best friends there were exchange students from South America), and had the opportunity to travel Europe and Germany.

Won "Rotary Exchange Student of the Year"; a scholarship over 1000 Euros to return to Germany during the summer of 2013 (planning on potentially making a gap year out of it and studying both in France and Germany). Over 100 other exchange students had been nominated.

Two week internship at the Jahrhunderthalle, an events venue in Germany. Translated brochures, helped with the organization of the offices, and performed basic engineering tasks in preparation for major two events.

Was also an English tutor to 5th graders at a local school.

Volunteer:

Junior Volunteer at my city's local hospital. Been working since freshmen year and have over 100 hours accumulated. Next year I'm probably going to be end up as my shift's leader.

Volunteered over the summer at my city's library.

Peer tutor at my high school's English Learning Department

Would say I have maybe around 200-250 hours accumulated in total.

Work:

Recreation Leader at my city.

Additional:

Co-president and founding member of District 5170 Rotex; an international program supported and funded by Rotary where previous exchange students work together with the exchange program in various ways.

Secretary of my school's Make-A-Wish-Foundation (but honestly we don't do crap hahahaha).

I play tennis. Was on the JV team freshmen year and am planning on trying out this year too.

Really into photography. Helped my friend get her modeling application together and would definitely consider sending in a portfolio to colleges.

I absolutely love learning languages. I speak 5. English, Spanish, German fluently. My Chinese is advanced but could be better. Right now I'm currently learning French. I think if I work hard I'll be able to get into French 4AP next year. Learning languages is definitely one of my passions.

I play violin. Taking the ABSRM Level 7 test (second highest level) this coming June. Also involved in my city's local youth orchestra.

General Academic Plans:

-Take Health and Physics at my local community college to boost up my current GPA
-Debating whether or not I should do Middle College next year. I'd really like to get out of the high school environment but don't know how colleges would judge that decision.
-Major: International Business

Okay well I guess that's all I can think of from the top of my head... My family isn't affluent by any means so I'm pretty much aiming for just the UCs. Getting into Stanford is a totally different story though. In my opinion, it really is the only private school worth its price for me. No idea though if I even should apply...

Please let me know what you guys think my chances are into getting into the UCs (specifically which ones) and Stanford. I would also love if you guys could let me know how I could improve my resume. What type of SAT score should I aim for and how many more/which APs should I take? Should I be sucking up majorly to my teachers for recommendation letters? What do you guys think of me doing Middle College next year? Would it help or hurt me?

Thanks so much guys!

Bump ^^^^^^^^

Chance me and I promise I’ll chance back!

It’s too early to give you an accurate chance, but I would say you’re on the right track for a prestigious college. I don’t know about Stanford (since you live 15 minutes away), but I think you’ll have a great chance at Berkeley! Chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1275723-chance-me-top-tier-colleges.html

You look like you have a good chance at many top colleges, especially with your ECs. Still, we need your SAT and junior year classes/grades, which are the most important, to decide. Its equally important to make a list of matches and safeties, as well as your reaches.

For SATs and APs - As high as possible, that’s always the answer, and take as many classes as you can maintain a high grade in. So 4 APs and all As is better than 5 APs and some Bs.

You don’t need to suck up to your teachers, but yes, be on their good side. If you have a good relationship with your junior year teachers, its nice to ask them before the school year ends because they will have known you a full year and will have plenty of time to write the letters. Be aware, I asked one of my teachers in May of Junior year, after IB exams, and he wrote the letter the week before the EA deadline.

You might be surprised at where you could get merit aid. Of course, if you got into a better UC, that would be the better choice. Did you make NM Commended?

Apply to Stanford as the reach. You seem very qualified for UCs if you stay on your track so apply to those too (Berkeley might make a very good match for you).

Just a note, Stanford’s virtually free (no tuition, no room and board) if your parents make under 60k/year. If they make under 100k you don’t pay tuition. Apply and see what happens.

You’re definitely an interesting applicant. Languages and your overseas experience will probably be your big selling point in your essays etc. It definitely applies to your major intentions, which I imagine you could also emphasize.

Other than that, you definitely seem to do things because you love them and I imagine that will comae across in your app. Try to nail your SAT, 2300+ would probably qualify as highly competitive.

I think you’ll do great when you apply. Stanford tends to put huge focus on their essays, so spend a lot of time on them. And you should definitely submit anything which you think will add to your application, so put that photography supplement together as well. Lots of Luck!
