Hi! I’m currently an international student studying at a boarding school in the States. I’m interested in foreign languages and was wondering if there are any foreign language awards I am eligible for.
- I’m not a US citizen
- I speak Japanese and Mandarin (heritage speaker)
Ask your boarding school’s adviser.
This would matter if you intend to major in a foreign language, along wirh evidence of proficiency.
Are you a heritage speaker for both Japanese and Mandarin? Are you studying a language at your boarding school?
I’m a heritage speaker for Japanese and have been learning Mandarin since I was 5. I’m taking Japanese at school!
I would think that you would only be eligible for awards for non-heritage languages.
There is a mandarin speech contest sponsored by the Chinese Language Teacher’s Association that you may want to look into. The contests seem to be regional. I remember watching one on YouTube, if you’re interested in seeing the level necessary.
Although not an award per se, you could take the HSK exams, which go beyond an AP level, and which could demonstrate your accomplishments in Mandarin.
Perhaps there are Japanese essay writing contests in Japan that you could enter? Perhaps there is a Japanese or Mandarin version of Le Grand Concours? Your Japanese teacher may know.
