Hello CCers,

I'm planning on taking a (college) class over the summer, and my guidance counselor is suggesting that I take an Intermediate Spanish course. I'm currently a sophomore (in Spanish III Honors). I don't struggle with Spanish, but I'm concerned about the summer course because it is online. I just don't know if taking a foreign language course online would be worth it, since I think you get so much more in a classroom. Do you think online foreign language would be more difficult? I'd really appreciate the input.

Thanks!

I’ve taken one online language class through a college and another through my high school. The college course was great, it was through Skype so I could actually hear the teacher’s voice and learn pronunciation. I felt like I learned a ton in that course, and if the college one you’re thinking of taking is arranged in a similar way, I say go for it.

On the other hand, the one I took through my high school was entirely online and I didn’t really learn anything, so in that case I would have definitely benefited from classroom instruction. So it’s up to you, but based on experience, it’s best to have some sort of vocal component, whether that be online or otherwise. Hope that helps!

That does help, actually! I’ll definitely learn more about how the course will be taught before I decide to take it. Thanks!
