Foreign Language Requirement at Clemson University

I am a current junior in high school who visited Clemson in April for their Spring Blitz and loved it! As I have been looking at the admissions requirements though, I have noticed that 3 years of a foreign language are required. I have only been able to take 2 years of Spanish due to taking health science courses like anatomy and pathophysiology (I want to major in biology and become a PA), volleyball, and choir. I am out of state (Texas!) and will be applying to the honors college. I realize that my counselor can write a note explaining the reason why I was not able to take 3 years, but I was just curious about how much this will really hurt my application, especially into the honors college.

https://www.clemson.edu/admissions/counselors.html#prereqs indicates that it is recommended, but you can apply without.

What was the highest level of Spanish that you completed?

However, the explanation of skipping core college prep courses for electives may not be too convincing.

The highest level I completed was Spanish II. I looked into taking Spanish III through a local college over the summer, but I did not have the prerequisites. I have instead been looking into taking a credit by exam test through UT (as seen below) in order to earn the credit. Still, I have not taken Spanish since freshman year, and I realize that 3 months may not be enough time to prepare for a test covering 3 years worth of Spanish.

I think it’s going to depend on the other factors as well - test scores, GPA, class rank & course rigor. I actually think the fact that your electives are in the are is which you want to pursue makes a decent case. Your best bet is to contact an admissions officer and speak with them. Ask them what they think and how they would view that. All the best!

iloveyou3000 did you get in with only 2 years of language?

You could try and take college level 2 ( which is equivalent to hs level 3)?

@Empireapple - the OP is a current Jr who is planning to apply next year.
