Foreign Language Requirements

I'm going to be starting electrical engineering at UIUC this fall and I don't have the foreign language requirements done yet. I understand that I would have to take courses up to a third level and I plan on taking French 101, 102 and 103. Would these courses be counted as credit towards my free electives? My major requires 12 hours of free electives in order to graduate and so it would be great if the courses could be counted toward free elective credits. (Each course is 4 hours and so once I finish all three, I would have completed 12 hours.)

I read the exceptions to free electives under the Engineering Wiki and it says for foreign languages: "College credit may be used if a language placement examination has been taken and the college hours used do not duplicate more than the last two years of high school course work. Credit earned in the student's native language is not allowed."

I haven't taken French in high school since Grade 9 and my placement exam placed me at the lowest level course so I'm assuming that this restriction will not apply.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Talk to an Electrical Engineering advisor, or the Electrical Engineering Undergrad office, about this. Admissions may also be helpful. They’re the one’s who determine what and how things count towards your degree.
