Foreign Language Requirements

Hi guys,

I was just wondering, does Harvard consider Latin a foreign language? My reason for that is I'm a freshmen and I'm taking Latin this year and I noticed on the college board's website that Harvard recommends 4 years of a foreign language. So if Harvard doesn't count Latin as a foreign language since it isn't spoken in any countries (except the Vatican) am I screwed or what?

it counts.

Ok thanks. Also, do all four years of a foreign language have to be in the same language? Thanks.

It's better if they are all for the same language.

Let me note that this isn't written in stone. I got in without taking a language my fourth year of high school, since I wanted to take two sciences instead and had a full schedule.

You should do everything you can to follow their guidelines, but admissions sees everything in context- they'll understand and support an attempt to pursue your interests enthusiastically. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't take Latin- by all means take it, preferably for four years).

I almost decided to drop spanish and take two sciences, but ended up taking just AP physics and AP spanish. If you plan to major in science, they probably would not look down on taking two sciences instead of a language. if you decide not to take four years of language, make sure you take another academic class.
