I've been wondering what would be a good SAT II score for a language. I've been self studying spanish for a couple of years now off and on, and am in Spanish 2 right now (but we go really slow and are only on tu commands...for the fourth week). Duke is obviously a top school and to get placed out of spanish 4, one would just need a 660. So if I got a 660 would that be satisfactory to all schools, or would they still just think that it's not a 700+ and not all that great?

If I were a counselor I would prefer a guy with 600 on three lang sat II, than one with 800 on one.

I don't think that many people would disagree that the language tests are among the hardest, of not THE hardest, of all the SAT II exams. I also think that admissions counselors are impressed by high scores on language exams, especially since, like you said, a 660 places you out of spanish 4. However, it is important to remember that, although, your score might be impressive, the "Academic Index Calculator" and other similar programs, do not discriminate. A 660 is a 660, no matter what exam it was earned on.

But what does the Academic Index Calculator matter? Schools don't use that sort of thing do they?

Oh yeah, I was wondering if people could tell me what they made on Spanish SAT II and how many they missed/omitted. I'd really appreciate this. Thanks.

The 660 might not be seen as that great, given its relatively low percentile. I'm not sure what the exact percentile is, but I got a 760 on Spanish, which (depressingly) is only the 82nd percentile. So, I would imagine that a 660 would be around 50th percentile. I would say that for a language, since so many people score well, a 700+ is satisfactory if not your native language and 750+ if it is your native language.

I just got out my score report to see how many I missed...and it doesn't say. So, I searched for my barron's sat ii spanish book and these are the conversions

Raw:Scaled
80-85:800
72-80:750-800
65-72:700-750
57-65:650-700
50-57:600-650
42-50:550-600

so, you can get a raw score of about 58 or 59 to get a 660, which would be missing about 20-22 questions.

I think that they do use this system, or at least something similar. That former admissions counselor wrote about it in an "A for Admission." I'm pretty sure they have something like the Academic Index, but who knows how important it is anyway.

I have the Barron's book, but am a little skeptical about using their scales, because I've heard they aren't accurate and are a little harder, plus that just seems to be Barron's. I am even a little skeptical about using the scale from the Real SAT II's because I took Writing and by their scale, I would have scored 50 points lower than I really did, so I was just asking to see if the Spanish scale has changed dramatically like the Writing.
Yeah, I can't remember exactly, but I think the average is about 630, so 660 would be around 60th or so. But then again that is with many of the test takers being native speakers. I'm not too worried aobut a low Spanish score because even if I get a 660, I will have three other scores higher. I just hope to score well enough to say to colleges that I studied spanish and make it actually seem like I did, since I'm so far behind because of my school system. Thanks again everyone. If anyone has the number they missed or think they missed/skipped and their scores, I'd be appreciative.

By the way i have studied german for 8+ years, and when i had to take i saw the test format for the first time, since i had two other sat II on that day, and didn't prepare at all for the german. I got 780, and around 89 percentile, but I am sure that I know german better than 95 of the takers at least.
I heard spanish curve is much more tolerant than german curve.

IRONY I TELL YA!!!
Just an hour ago I received my Spanish with Listening Test score because it was delayed.
How much did i get? - 660 exactly, my percentile is 52. Low? Yes, but i like my score.
So my SAT II's are:

Math 2C 800
German 780
Writing 680
Spanish 660

I like 'em.
