My daughter already has a couple of solid SAT2 scores, but we're noticing some elite schools "suggest" one in a foreign language. She has three years of HS Spanish and does very well, but I'm sure many native speakers (which she isn't) take the test. How hard is it to score well (700+) on the Spanish SAT2?

Shouldn't your daughter be worried about this???

I didn't mean to sound snippy... just too stressed out over sat II scores...

No, I do all the worrying. ;)

I think it is fairly difficult to score in the 700's after just 3 years of h.s. spanish, unless ur a native speaker or have a very high proclivity for the spanish language. Although the colleges "recommend" one in the languages, it really has no bearing on admissions, all SAT II scores are worth the same in their eyes. The reason they recommend a SAT II in a language is b/c if ur admitted, u would have to take one anyways for placement purposes - they're basically setting it up so u knock out two birds w/ one stone. I would recommend that ur daughter take some practice tests and see what score range she is scoring in. The test itself is a toss-up between some fairly easy, standard questions and some difficult questions for non-native speakers. If she's fairly confident she can get in the 700's, even high 600's, I'd say go for it, but other than that, she doesn't need it and can take it sometime later

its much more low stress if ur taking it for placement rather than admissions :) and what you get doesnt really matter after getting in

Thanks for the good advice, I'll suggest that to her. BTW, we were at Duke this past weekend, what an incredible school. Best of luck there!

i scored a 710 after a couple years in HS french. it's not super difficult. my friends who take spanish took it after their 3rd year and in general.. they did just fine.. the majority of them scored 700+ although the people who took spanish listening scored significantly higher.. they said listening seems intimidating BUT the people speak as slowly as (sorry, these aren't my words..) retarded remedial-level spanish kids with the vocabulary to match.

I scored a 770 after my junior year of (honors) Spanish, if it helps.
