what is your opinion on going straight from high school to some foreign med school where you can graduate in 6-8 years. Are these colleges a "hoax" or worth looking into? Would one graduating from there be able to practice in the US?

Also, more specifically, has anyone heard of St. Georges University (Caribbean) and/or University of Silesia (poland) ? are these schools "real" in that they are a fine alternative to studying in a straight med program in the US?

Thanks in advance! :)

They're basically hoaxes. The numbers are readily available from official sources online, which have been linked to several times on this bulletin board. About 60% of them will pass the first step of their board exams, and about 50% of those who pass will eventually match into a US residency.

Of course, some will pass on a second attempt at Step I, but some will fail the second step or third step of the boards. If you assume this is about a wash, then approximately 30% of students who enroll at overseas schools will end up being permitted to practice medicine in the US.

does anyone have these links off-hand?

There are loads of prestigious universities that do the kind of program that you mentioned (Cambridge, Oxford, and most other UK schools), but I don't think St. Georges or the University of Silesia have quite the same standing.
