do i need to bring formal clothing to college?

Unless you go to church and insist on dressing up for it, no.

If your school is going to sponsor a formal dance, some do, and you want to attend, then yes, you'll need something formal. If you mean formal in the sense of something appropriate for business, my answer would be own one suit, if you're male or female, if you're male this is all you'll need for a formal dance too, it will get you through any presentations you need to make a good impression for and serve you well for job interviews and career fairs. I'm a freshman girl and I've worn my suit the last two days, once to present at a conference and once to interview for a job. Other than that you shouldn't need much formal clothing, unless you're pledging a frat or sorority, in which case you'll probably need more.

Bring them.

I have to dress up twice a week one average..........

fraternity meetings, company information sessions, semi-formals, internship fair, career fair, student organization interviews, eTC.

Yes absolutely, especially if you go to college down south. By 18, every man should own at least one suit.

I use them for:

Lectures, meetings in Lee Chapel (unique to W&L)
Giving tours (I'm a tour guide)
Fraternity Stuff
Homecoming, Holiday weekend dinners
Fancy Dress Ball (this requires a tux) in the Spring
Interviews (for different committees, for scholar programs, for jobs, etc)

We sometimes have little fancy dress parties (among our hall) where people dress up somewhat - girls wear dresses, guys generally have a coat (but, of course, there are usually people who aren't dressed up as well) that make it nice to have something semiformal. Also, there are of course frat formals and things, but my formal clothes haven't been brought out that often, but they also don't take much space so I'm happy that I brought them.

I suggest bringing something because if you need it, you will be happy to have it because there are some situations that really demand it - if you don't need it, a formal outfit won't take up that much space.

you should also have one for interviews or presentations on campus. i did a lot of formal presentations in my classes and the guys always had to wear suits. one guy didn't have one on campus and had to go out and buy a new suit the day before a presentation. he felt like a big idiot since he had like four at home.

You need a suit, and several dress shirts, several ties, and at least one other pair of dress trousers besides those from your suit. There's nothing wrong with being able to dress up.

If you are thinking of joining a fraternity in an SEC, some ACC schools or Big XII school, then you need probably 2 suits...

i definately wouldnt go so far as to have 2 suits... even if you are doing a fraternity. All you really need to bring is a navy blue blazer and some khakis. Those will cover all of your tailgating needs, fraternity meetings, and whatever else you are going to do.

I have two full suits and another (cheap) coat (plus a tux for really formal occasions). If its not a big thing and I have to wear coat and tie, I just go with the cheap stuff. But for fraternity rush (three straight days in formal wear) and if there are a lot of formal events, you dont want to wear the same suit every day.

I would say everyone should have one suit. If you're going south - you should probably have two. And having a cheaper coat that you care less about and can just throw on is useful too.

I wear suits (business attire) almost everyday, but only because of my job, not because of college.

Really? I've only gotten dressed up once since college started (a dress shirt, tie, and khakis). I could see maybe in junior or senior years for internships, job interviews, and the like, but I certainly wouldn't bring more than 1 suit. Maybe that's just me--I'm not in a frat, I'm not big on formals, etc.

Bring at least one suit. I'm a freshmen and I wish I did. Next year for sure. There are many events that require formal/semi formal clothing.
