Former CC student...I can answer questions!

Hey all, I am a former CC student from Modesto JC. I transferred to Cal as a Political Science major. I Tagged with UCSB, UCSD, UCD, UCSC. I was admitted to UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, UCB, UCD, and UCSC. Now, I am busy with classes and am unwilling to chance millions of you BUT I am willing to answer technical questions such as those about TAG, Starting Point at Cal, Personal Statements, etc. I'll try to respond promptly as I remember what it was like to refresh CollegeConfidential every 2 minutes waiting to see if I received a response!

So I’m a Civil Engineering major and I’m wondering if…

Is it better to apply for UCD/UCI TAG (intending to finish all pre-reqs) and end up with 1 pre-req unfinished? or is it better to just apply for regular admissions without TAG with 1 pre-req unfinished?

How about the same question except with with 2 pre-reqs missing?

Is a GPA of 3.5 or above good enough for Civil Engineering for UC Davis and Irvine without TAG?

And finally, if I do transfer as a Civil Engineering to UCB, UCLA, UCD, or UCI, can I change majors later on? Like to another Engineering major, or possibly a L&S major?

Do you happen to know the unit limits for all the UC schools before they kick out transfers out for single and double majors? How about number of quarters or semesters before they kick transfers out?

Finally, do you know any major close to Civil Engineering (maybe Mech Engn) that will let one to practice Civil engineering after graduation? (sorry I should probably put this in a different section).

@ Kelli: Totally agree with your last sentence; seems like it wasn’t long ago you and I were freaking out about all of this haha. I’ll see ya around at Cal!! :).

Really nice for u to be doing this btw :D. People should be asking u things left and right.

Dear Kelli,

Thanks for offering to help us. Could you answer my TAG question that I posted in a thread above this one?

Thanks for offering to answer questions…

Im a science major… biochemistry or bioengineering… do I need to finish all my pre-reqs for TAG? Im looking to TAG to UCI and UCSD… Im a freshmen right now and Im looking to apply in Fall 2011 for Fall 2012… Thanks again…

Yes and no respectively.

Irvine requires all pre-reqs to be finished by end of spring (if you decide not to or can’t complete 1 or 2 of those pre-reqs by end of spring, you should inform them but they’ll probably accept you)

SD only requires you to finish IGETC for TAG. Any additional coursework will just give you a preference in certain majors.

For example:
If you finish the IGETC and finish Chem, Math, and first semester for bio, you’ll have better chances of getting the major biochem than someone who just finished Chem and Math.

How was the transition? Did the classes kick your arse?

@ eternalquestion: Thanks. How much yrs did you spend at CC?

When do you need to do your IGETC certification?

It doesn’t seem like the OP will be returning after all. Probably got to bogged down =(.

@ blackmamba: This is my second year and I hope to transfer out to UCLA by the end of it.

@ iZychr: You have to do IGETC cert. around Aprilish or May. Something like that, but not for a while.

@ eternalquestion: So you’ll end up with 1 pre-req unfinished by spring 11?

@ blackmamba2410: POSSIBLY. Not because I can’t handle 26 units (and by handle I mean get at least a 3.10 =D) but because of possible scheduling conflicts. So I was wondering if it’s better to TAG but have a possibility of not being able to finish the last pre-req or just do regular admissions.

I like how this person made this thread then just abandoned it.

lol
10char

If you go to the OP’s profile…

(yesterday being Sunday)

Just plain rude. At least explain yourself.

It’s midterms at Berkley IIRC . They started the 16th of august so … 6 weekish in is right about now and they usually have 2 midterms and a final so 18 week semester 6/6/6 sounds about right

@eternalquestion

I was reading through the prereqs on Assist.org for Mechanical Engineering (which I assume has a pretty similar course articulation to Civil Engineering) at UCI and it says this:

The requirements that are bolded do not make up all of the prereqs that are listed on Assist.

Where did you hear that you have to have all the prereqs complete prior to transferring? It sounds like its the same deal with UCSD (and most likely other UC’s) where the more you have the better, but having one or two missing prereqs won’t automatically disqualify you.

@ Anonymousity: Yeah you’re right. I stupidly forgot to read the top carefully… I feel like such an idiot. Anyways I can TAG Irvine since I finished the minimum required. Thanks man, lifesaver =D.

Well, you might not want to relax just yet. I saw this on UCI’s TAG brochure:

link: http://www.admissions.uci.edu/pdf/TAG_brochure_fall2011.pdf</a></p>

I’m a little nervous too, because I’m applying to UCI and a handful of other UC’s as a Mechanical Engineer major and I will be missing one prereq by the end of Spring semester.

Our best bet is to call the transfer admissions at each school and find out in their own words what the deal is.

I’m also wondering about the same thing you are, eternal question. You literally asked the exact same questions I’ve had on my mind for a while. I’m also a civil engineering major, and I’m not sure if I should just apply to UCI/UCD regularly with one pre-req missing, or if I should go ahead and try getting a TAG for them. However, I’m only a freshman in my first semester of community college, so I’m not really in the same situation as you are. I wonder what this Kelli person is doing? They said they would answer any questions.
