Former/Current OOS Students - Financial Aid

Besides merit scholarships, how did UMD give you money? I already got the president's scholarship, but it barely makes a dent in the cost of UMD.

In terms of your financial need (just the price minus the EFC), how did UMD cover that? Was it just in federal and school grants? Did you have to pay less than your EFC? What I'm really asking is what kind of money made up your OOS package?

One of my biggest concerns is if you honestly cannot afford your EFC and you appeal your package, will UMD work their best to try to find you money? For me, I need the EFC to go down $10k before loans; I know that is quite a bit of money, but I would really like to attend!

I'm willing to take on loans (but not too many), and I am willing to do a work study.

One other thing I am concerned about is the rising cost of UMD for oos students. If UMD jumps up in cost year after year, how will I afford to attend if my EFC is already too much?

UMD is pretty stingy with OOS. You are lucky you got the president’s scholarship. My daughter who is in the Scholars program rec’d nothing so far. She is a junior now. However, she was easily able to find an on campus job and makes about $3500 per year. She was not awarded work study. Unfortunately, I would not count on them closing that gap for you.

I would echo what kbiresearch says for in state as well. They are not known for being generous with aid.

@kbiresearch @terpmom7 Thanks! I was worried about UMD being stingy…
Do you know anything about College of Agriculture scholarships? I applied, so I’m hoping I can get one!

I do not, @woodam. My D recently applied for a departmental scholarship (architecture major) and we are waiting to hear. I think once you get in you can apply next year for the department scholarships
