Hey, I was wondering if it is do-able to convince the financial aid office to give more money in grants? They gave me $4,000 a year and I want to see if I can get more.

You can ask. The worst they’ll say is, “no.” I asked at two of the schools at which my son was accepted. One basically laughed at me, the other provided several thousand dollars per year in additional grants.

Probably not. Most of what they offer is federal or state funds and they go according to the rules and are FAFSA-driven. I’m not sure how much “discretionary” $$ they have (my guess is not much). Let us know if they say yes! Generally UMD and “good financial aid” don’t go hand-in-hand, especially if you are OOS.

I agree with astrophysicsmom. Daughter is OOS is was offered nothing initially. I tried to get additional help & was offered very little, let’s say book money. I am unsure how this school is listed as “BEST VALUE” school for OOS students. We love UMD it offers nice research & internship oportunties but the cost can be a bit much for middle class families. I think if a college REALLY wants the student they will offer money. Just look at the scholarship threads under UMD.
