I was wondering why the Emory forum seems to be less active than the majority of the others on the top universities page. It just struck me that by looking at just the number of posts, we're near the bottom.

Scrapiron, my guess is that there are a number of reasons for the quiet period presently:

Summer... people are gone doing whatever they do during summer, and the soon-to-be hyper student applicants haven't gotten to that stage of their apps yet.

Learnlink... Emory has alternative "conferences", and I suspect that the combination of Learnlink and Facebook groups probably is enough for a lot of students;

It's just a couple of days before people start heading out ... as in the case of my daughter and I (coming out from CA on Tuesday)

Right now, I'm watching my daughter stack piles and piles of old clothes and stuff ... some to pack, some to give away, and some to be put away for when she comes home for visits. Do all of you other incoming freshmen have your act together? I asked my daughter if she had registered for MedBuddy yet (she hasn't) or reconciled all her myriad of choices for potential classes (almost, but not quite). We did go to Bed, Bath & Beyond and do the "pack & hold" trip -- that was fun and easy.

Personally, I think Emory's forum is fairly active. If you compare it to the colleges outside of the top twenty, it is comparatively very active. Emory is joined by the likes of MIT, CalTech, Stanford, and so on in the "Top CC Universities" section. It seems like the higher rated the college, the more activity..(not sure if this is true, but check out a regular State U or something and there is virtually no posts). Also, some of the 'CC top universities' are much larger than Emory..so these colleges naturally have more potential student/parent/prospie/lurker posters affiliated with them. (ie Michigan, Virgina, Cal, etc)

I have yet to start packing. I have, however, bought new clothes, reserved a 4.3cu refrigerator from SAMS CLUB in Atlanta, and made a basic list of what classes to request.

Orientation week starts Saturday, wow -- truly hard to believe college is days away. It just hit me.

Oh by the way, how long do parents usually stay for Orientation week?

My D has finally started getting her stuff together. She has no idea what classes she wants to take. We did the BBBY trip a while ago. Her room is a wreck...the three piles are more like mountains. I wish I could do it for her but it is finally time for me to let go.

As far as parents staying, I was told that they leave on Sunday. Orientation week is strictly for the students.

Finally, as of last night, D made some progress and we are looking much better, thankfully since we leave at 6 am tomorrow. Her cell phone broke; her original medical clearance form for the trainer got lost so there are lots of last minute things we will have to do today but the shipped boxes made it. I will have to mapquest directions to Target, Staples et al so we can get the fridge, printer and a few misc things. There are still good byes which seem to go on forever but I am feeling a lot better today than I did yesterday! D has some scenarios for classes and found her advisor on opus. Things seem to be coming together. NOt sure about medbuddy. Will check on that - thanks NCD. Also, never got it together to do the ID picture ahead of time but oh well. She can meet some kids standing in line! Good luck to all.

Movinmom, my approach is to clear the decks of as much as possible... because there are and always will be "lots of last minute things".

Here's the link to Emory - Student Health Services:

Click on MedBuddy-U and then register. They will ask for a lot of personal information, such as insurance information, medications, allergies, health history, etc. (My daughter really loved the part about sexual practices. You may want to leave the room at this juncture and let her finish the health history by herself ;))

I think I've done everything, but I'm not sure. There are so many things to do its hard to keep them all straight. I think that the classes I picked out will work, but it will be reassuring to be able to talk with someone about them when I get there. I ordered the firdge, got all my sheets, bought a new wardrobe because I had no clothes, filled out medbuddy, browsed learnlink, and about fifty other things that I can't remmember.

I have a question about what we have to do regarding our laptops. I heard we have to get rid of our anti-virus programs and donwload emory's semantic antivirus. I called tech support and they said that you do this on a cd. I only got one cd and that was to download learnlink. Is there another one on which you can download the antivirus program?

I can't believe that I have to leave so soon. What a lot of work.

I think I read that they give you the Emory software when you get there. Not to worry.

I downloaded an anti virus program off their website..I'm not sure if this is what you're supposed to do or not..

but it's http://it.emory.edu/showdoc.cfm?docid=3109

When we tried to register our son for medbuddy, we could not proceed past the step where you indicate whether or not the optional health insurance through Emory is necessary. We already handled this matter months ago, but apparently the Medbuddy registration process allows for doing this, too, and since the deadline has passed, it hangs on that screen and will not let us proceed unless we select an insurance company from the greyed-out drop-down list (inactive as it is greyed out). Anyone else have the problem? And, is Medbuddy registration really necessary or is it just a convenience?

Thanks for the help.

soddy

that's exactly what i've been trying to do tonight. Haven't found a way around it yet though.

You don't really need to sign up for Medbuddy. It just allows you to make appointments online, and you can ask the nurses/doctors at health service questions. If you need an appointment, you can just call health service so it really doesn't matter.

alright, thanks

Soddy and Esco, if you want to register, just sign back on using the userid/password you had designated... Might you have been using a browser other than Internet Explorer or Netscape Browser (such as Mozilla Firefox?) If that was the case, then use either of those browsers instead. Select the option in the middle that will then ask you for your insurance info. That will hopefully get you past that point in the registration.

Leaving tomorrow. Will see a braves game wednesday.

soddy, I had this same problem- it was because I was using firefox. use IE and you will be just fine.
