plainsman, not exactly. The mail could be taking longer

ZFanatic: "I wouldn't say I've heard enough to say whether or not they're including asians or not, but I do know that they say somthing to the effect of contact the minority dept or something (it's late) so I'd figure it's only URM's. "

Contact the "minority dept?" That's insulting. What are we back to separate water fountains and bathrooms too?

Doesn't Cornell have one admissions office for everybody? I don't remember my daughter sending her application to the "minority department." And I don't remember "minority dept." on the Common Application either.

^
quoted directly from the letter: If you have any questions about Cornell, we would live to hear from you. Please call the Multicultural Recruitment Office at 607-255-7233, or e-mail us at diversity@cornell.edu if we can be or any assistance.

Multicultural Recruitment Office, Minority Dept, whatever. I'm sorry if it offends you; Does it offend you when someone says oh he's black? Oh he's an Indian (Middle eastern or Native American)? I really don't see it as offensive or insulting at all...

The letters were obviously sent out to URMs, or under represented MINORITIES, and so you can see how someone might mistakenly off the top of his head say minority dept. I never even quoted "Minority Dept", I said something to the effect of... I'm not out to make racist comments or insult anyone, but being insulted by the phrase "Minority Dept" is quite ridiculous in my opinion.

lol, no need to get so offended.

Each school has an office for diversity affairs, or diversity programs, if you wish to call that a "minority dept". In Engineering it's the Diversity Programs in Engineering office.

But every application is read by the regular admissions office, and every decision is made by them and them alone.

Some of these likely letters are also invitations for special programs for URM students, who would need to contact their respective diversity programs office in order to accept their spot.

Has any asian received the letter yet?

dewdrop: All these lucky people got into Cornell and I'm still waiting (since October 12th!)
Being deferred is really sucking right now.
Sorry to rain on your parade guys, congratulations.

Congratulation to ALL ACCEPTEES! You guys hard-work finally paid off! Keep up your hard work and don't slack off during your final year guys (and girls)!

this is soo unreal, i really didnt think I had a chance at the ivies!! so many great students get turned away

can we just have further divisions?
asian
hispanics
african americans
white ppl
international
and between those split us up to our majors hahah obviously they do something similar already..

"The letters were obviously sent out to URMs, or under represented MINORITIES"

Correction: Some letters were sent to URMs. The one my daughter received this week has none of the quoted references. A large, internationally recognized university like Cornell has many constituencies and is looking for a highly qualified but diverse class. I suspect that the likely letters were similarly distributed.

Anyone here back yet from CAS?

My friend got a likely today. he is a urm

I got mine from CAS. Native American

first and foremost the likely letters are for students cornell wants to make sure go there...although they know that for many of these students other top schools will try to offer them great deals...

being a top URM student means that top colleges (especially on the east coast) will offer diversity programs...

i remember that during my visit to DHW many students were off to other top colleges hosting similar programs...

we do have to remember that it's all a numbers game at some point.

I wouldn't say that it is a "likely letter" seeing as it says in bold "you will be offered admission to Cornell." I got in as well, hah! been a good day, congrats and good luck

ChandlerBing

I agree, this is like Chinese water touture. Everyone I see being accepted just means one less spot available.

Congrats to all who received such good news!

SVMMom, agreed! But think of it this way: you applied to one college at Cornell, so not all of the spots being taken up on this thread and elsewhere are directly taking your daughter's spot.
For some reason I feel like your D will get in, I don't know why.
As for myself... only time will tell.

When does Cornell send likely letters for women in engineering?

ahhh
I wish i get the letter...

I am with less pressured right now than a lot of you guys. I got accepted by all the Canadian universities I applied for, and I love every, single, one of them. If my attempt for Cornell fails, I'll head to University of British Columbia for free, well... almost.
