I found myself a place about a mile out from FSU on West Pensacola street, looked fairly decent for the money. There were some sketchy-looking people roaming about a block away from campus near the university however, so is the area safe?

Well, what’s the place called? I live on Ausley Road which is between Pensacola and Jackson Bluff, and there’s always sketchy people wandering about. Rule of Thumb: Don’t walk around alone. Always lock your door. Carry pepper-spray or something. Duh. I always abide by those rulse anywhere I go, just because it’s better to be safe than sorry. I’ve lived there a year, haven’t had any problems.

I regret to inform you that, Tallahassee is full of “sketchy” looking people.
A mile out down Pensacola isn’t too far if you are speaking of the area towards LIT or Los Compadres.
Just don’t be a typical Floridian and walk around non-chalant, lock your doors, and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Don’t walk around alone? Damn.

I don’t really know anyone in Tallahassee and I’m quiet a bit of a loner, and will be depending on either my bike or my bus on transportation most of the time. I got a place at the Sand Pebbles apartments because it looked good for the money and wasn’t rundown like some of the other places I looked at.

You serious? Is Tallahassee really that bad to the point where it’s not safe to go out for a jog and some fresh air and such? Are there drug gang members that patrol town or something? Locking the doors sounds like standard procedure but I do like to go outside plenty of times, and Tallahassee looked like the town where I can ride my bike all over the streets and enjoy the greenery that I couldn’t enjoy in Miami.

This is the state capital, I thought the unsettled youth I saw on the street weren’t typical.

Sure, during the daytime you should be fine, but you should always be cautious. I actually live in Germany when I’m not at school and I can tell you it’s a lot safer here than in Tallahassee lol. During the last school year, more students were robbed than the previous years (like 3-4 times more than previous years…at least that’s what I remember reading in the school newspaper…)

Tallahassee is fairly typical crime wise. No worse or better then other cities the same size. We are definitely better then Miami though! I think the college atmosphere does seem to make some think of the kids as easy targets but as long as you do not present yourself as a target you will be okay. Take reasonable steps to insure your safety and you will be fine. Welcome to Tallahassee!!

Ndynslvr, i never said you can’t go for a jog lol.
I dont own a vehicle, i bike around town all the time, and have been rather hammered quite a few times walking alone throughout much of the town trying to find my way back to the dorms when i was a freshman and now my apartment. I’m not a small guy by any means. You can walk alone, just don’t be an idiot about it. I wouldn’t know how to “not” to act, since I’m from NYC and street smarts just come with the territory.

These people are exaggerating a bit. West Pensacola isn’t upscale, but it’s fine. You’ll be fine at Sand Pebbles. It’s full of FSU and TCC students. I lived in University Club, which is right off West Pensacola, for two years. The sketchy area in Tallahassee is French Town, which starts a couple blocks north of FSU. Some of the neighborhoods around FAMU aren’t the greatest either.
