I came here three and a half years ago seeking information as my first child was in the midst of college applications and then acceptance decisions. I am just wondering who is still here from that time, and how did their kids' choices work out?

My son, as most know, chose Tulane. Today he is interviewing at medical schools. He has loved his time in New Orleans, and Katrina provided him a proving ground to test his resolve to go into medicine as a career.

My son is a fourth year student at University of Chicago -- math major -- he's not sure what to do after graduation in the spring. I think the current plan is to look for a job.

I'm here, too. S is a third-year at Berkeley, still political science major but now interested in some kind of journalism. Maybe. (Changes every few months). D is a senior applying to colleges for next year.

D1 graduated and is now in grad school, odd circumstances which caused her a delay in finishing her double major 2nd degree on time was actually fortuitous, as she had the extra time to connect with a prof in the subjec she preferred and do some volunteer wrok in his research lab. She is now in grad school with that prof and doing well.

D2 is 3rd year Berkeley (abroad this term), still same major, same sport, happy with that selection.

D3 has applied to ONE LAC type school, where she is already admitted with their highest scholarship and will put in an app to a state public safety (where grad student sister goes) to give her choices next spring. It has been so easy, I almost feel guilty after the CC angst I have seen and personally endured with D1s applications.

I'm still here too. I didn't really sign on until after DS's college search was done. In fact, I think he might have been a freshman when I defected from "you know where". DS graduated from undergrad school in May and is now in grad school (good support here for that grad school hunt). DD is a sophomore at Santa Clara University, and I would NEVER have known about that school had it not been for an SOS I put out when she was a sophomore or maybe early junior year in HS which Carolyn answered. Folks here endured my tales about the HS guidance department and the ill computed GPAs, and all sorts of other things. At this point, I hope I can at least give back some of the wisdom I gained here.

my son is a junior at Duke and living abroad...his Dad is with him this Thanksgiving. We have a son who is a junior in HS now..and we are gearing up for his search. Duke has delivered a great spirited, fun, challenging experience for my son and given him that second family of dear friends who set the pace for him and always intrigue him. He likes his teachers and his peers, has been abroad twice and had one great job so far out of his four years...I am sure his return to Duke for his final year will be bittersweet..the years flew by.
Always interested in the outcomes of ya'll's sons and daughters...very good to hear!

I am on my way to graduating in May with a degree in International Relations and a minor in Music. Not heavily as involved with post-graduation plans as some, but I am hoping to work with elementary school students (normal tutoring, which I do now, or possibly with music) near where I go to college through Americorps for a year. I just found out I'm getting the chance to go to Mississippi over spring break and help with Katrina stuff. And in the summer after graduation hopefully I'm going to go backpacking in Europe, but that's still in tentative stages.

long term plan is to go into intelligence work with the government, but right now I seem to be concentrating more on other things...

I am a 3 1/2 year veteran here (had a name-change after 3 months when I realized I was in for the long-haul).

D graduated from Rice in May and is in discernment for Episcopal Seminary. WildChild was a hs junior when I found this forum and is a college soph now. He is talking about law school. I'm pretty sure he'll be in school forever and I'll be working until I'm 95.

MOWC, care to adopt me? I would not mind spending more years studying. Oh wait, that is what I am doing. I thought about joining the "Help Make History" campaign, but it appears that those folks do read CC and did not believe I was "qualified" to serve HRH. So, graduate school it will be. Hard to believe but I am putting the final touches on the four applications I'm planning to send out.

Seems like yesterday that the undergraduate applications were uploaded! The good news is that this batch was even more uneventful as the last one.

I am still hanging around, too. S1 is currently in grad school in NYC in music performance after graduating from Eastman in spring of 2006. S2 is a senior at Lewis & Clark with a bio major and chem minor. He is currently in the process of applying to grad schools for marine science. S3 is a sophmore at Oberlin majoring in biology and math and thinking about going into education.

Son is now a senior, music performance trumpet. End of last year he had just 5 more units to graduate. Rather than graduate early or take it easy, he will be a double major-adding education. We thought that he should enjoy 4 years of college and agree with his decision. He will work on credential/student teaching next year.

Guilty as charged with continuing to hang around CC, though my S has never so much as Googled it as far as I can tell. He is set to graduate this year, and hopes to head into a PhD program or, failing that, a Masters with some financial support. He's applying to eight programs, last I heard, though I'm not aware that any actual application has gone out. He's also talked about Teach for America, though I don't know where that stands.

He can't believe he's almost through college. I think he'd be happy to take courses forever. He's just got to find someone to fund his education habit.

Good to hear from some of the other "oldtimers" !

Still here, too. S is a senior, not sure what his next move is. Not ready for grad school yet. Will probably work, possibly in enviro field he's done in summers, and try his hand at professional poker.....we'll see!

I'm here. I lurked and joined when DS was a college freshman. DD1 was a college soph and DD2 was a HS freshman at the time.

Now, DD1 works as a consultant for a major international business firm, after 4.5 years /2 degrees (EE and business). Lots of travel, based out of our home.
DS graduated in May (business) and is gainfully employed 10 minutes from our home at a different international company.
It is fun to hear them try to lure each other so they can earn the referral bonuses!
DD2 moved to the left coast and is a freshman at USD and is just thriving.

I, too, hope to be able to give back though work has been very demanding this fall.

I came to this forum anxious that my S was making a horrible mistake in settling for a school which I thought might have been below his abilities, while turning down "better" schools. But he - and this forum - taught me that fit can be more important than some ranking that calculates items that had no impact on the quality of the education/environment he wanted. He told me "it's not where I start out, but where I end up that counts, Mom". So he went to the school that fit him, graduated summa cum laude, and is now in his first year at GULC. Good thing he never listened to his dear old mum.

DD will graduate in May from Rice, and is mulling options. She will probably go to Tajikistan or Armenia this summer to finish up her Persian study (compliments of the US strategic language initiative). She is leaning towards doing grad studies in Persian, which is interesting, since she did none as part of her undergraduate degree! She hasn't applied yet, and may wait until next year to apply so that her language skills will be stronger. DS is now a freshman at Rice in Chem E. We're happy! :)
