My son will have completed four years of latin in HS. How does the Academy determine what foreign language a cadet will take. If the cadet has any choice…what language would you recommend with my son’s background?
(He recieved his appointment 12-16-2005)

I would suggest another Romantic language like Spanish or French.

it also depends on what your son's major will be, some majors do not require a foreign language

Throughout the entire application process and interviews, my son has made it clear he wants pre-med. He was selected in the first round.

There isn't a specific "pre med" major at the academy.

We are aware that there is not a "pre-med" curriculum. With that said, does any cadet have any feedback re: selection of foreign language choices?

yea we will take placement tests at BCT and I'm sure we can choose which test to take... then they will be placed in an appropriate level and language class

I am fluent in Chinese, so could I take a Chinese class to keep up the language?

In BCT you will take a placement test (if you want to) in the language of your choosing.

There are no Latin courses at the Academy. There are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish courses.

"Techie" majors require no foreign language, but you can still take them if you want. It is just an extra class load.

As far as "Pre-Med", there is no major in particular, but majoring in some sort of biology will allow you to apply for medical school after graduation. I know of an '05 graduate who is currently at medical school.

Umm.. this year the placement tests for languages were online before you inprocessed. Also, the dean is looking into changing the curriculum of engineering majors so that there is some sort of language requirement there since the Operational AF wants 80% of people to be able to recognize languages. that comes from the minutes of a senior leadership roundtable.

I'm torn. I want to do languages (engineering major though). I have three years of Japanese from living there, and 3 years of French. I want both! But that would kill me, unless I can validate a lot. ahhh.

Yes, I forgot to mention that engineering majors will soon have language as a requirement. I don't know when for sure, so you'll probably be able to take some language without it affecting your major. Any of you thinking of going Aero Eng. or Astro Eng. will probably end up changing your minds since it seems like half of the cadets with those dreams do.

If you're fluent in a language, you probably won't be able to take it here. However, the exception to this is thta some core classes are taught in a foreign language, so if you want an extra challenge or if it's something that you think would be fun, you could do this. There aren't many, but that is an option.

Also, it's possible to get a minor in a language here, which you can do if you take 4 classes of a particular language at the 200-level or higher. However, if you're too good at the language and place ridiculously high, I don't think this is really an option.

I encourage anyone who's interested in languages to maybe try a new one if they having quite a bit of experience in another one. It could broaden your horizons as well as be a little challenging; you do NOT want to waste time in a class where you learn absolutely nothing, regardless of what grade you may get.

I would recommend Chinese or Spanish

I hate foreign languages.

Dropped out after 2 years from spanish.

Hopefully being a techie will make that a non-issue.

Maybe having 2 years of teachers that got fired because of out of control classes/skipping class and not teaching anything had an effect on that.

Random thoughts from me.

I heard that eng. majors will have a language requirement.
