I'm selecting my FPF courses for this coming fall. I'm undeclared at Letters & Science but am planning to take the pre-med route. My SAT I scores are: reading-620, Math-680, Writing- 690. AP scores are: Bio- 5, World-4, US -5, Lang & Comp- 4. I am currently taking Calc AB and expect to pass--if not, i will take it over summer break at a CC. With all that considered, what would be a favorable course load at FPF this fall?

here is what i have in mind:

English R1B (4 units)
Math 1b (4 units)
EPS 80 (2 units--Physical Sci Breadth)
History 7B (4 units--Historical Studies breadth & American Cultures Req)

does that look like an easy to handle load? i don't want to stress during my 1st semester. Also, are there certain classes or teachers that are very popular at FPF? any insight from those who have already experienced FPF will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable load to me. I also had 14 units at FPF this past fall and found it very manageable. I was able to get an above average GPA while adjusting to college life.

My favorite class was Philosophy 2 with Prof. Van Munching. It isn’t an easy class but he will teach you to think in a very critical and deep manner, something that will be very useful during the rest of your time at Cal. He also knows how to make what can be a boring subject fun and interesting (even, dare I say, entertaining at times). A great way to satisfy your philosophical breadth requirement.

Another good class is Rhetoric 2 (public speaking) with Prof. Lutz. She is very good at teaching you not only how to speak in public but communicate in general. I was coming off of four years in debate at the national level yet still learned a lot. It won’t get you any breadth requirements, but for a simple 2 unit class, you will get a lot of college and life skills.

Finally, I would advise you to avoid R1B (or R1A, for that matter) with Nanda. It isn’t a hard class but she is unclear about what she expects. Even though in the end you will likely get a good grade with not a lot of effort for a four unit class, it isn’t worth the stress.

what is the difference between Math 1A/B and Math 16A/B? I need to full fill whatever is required for pre-med route;however, i’m not so great at math. which one would you recommend? also, can i take part A in a CC over summer and take B at FPF? or do med schools require them to be taken at a university?

i got a 690 on writing and a 4 on ap lang, so i’m guessing i don’t have the take the first half of R&C. which teacher would be best for part R1B?

Medical schools don’t care which series you take.

FPF does not offer Math 16B, so it is best you take 16A in FPF and 16B spring 2010.

I was immune to R&C A and R&C B due to my 5 on IB English A1 HL, so I cannot recommend you anything regarding R&C, but yea you only need R&C B due to your English language AP test

Interesting dissection of the courses, now I have a better idea which classes is more interesting.

Just wondering, does the courses at FPF account as actual Berkeley courses? Because as part of the econ requirement, it said that I need to have taken stat/calculus at Berkeley, so does the stat FPF course count as…taking it at Berkeley?

Hi everyone, I was just admitted to Berkeley and was planning on double majoring in econ and business (yeah i know i have to apply to haas). I was wondering if you think that this would be a handleable course load for my first semester.

I know its five classes but its only 15 units. I might have to take English R1B but it depends on what I get on my ap lit exam. So I was just gonna hold off on that until the spring. Does anyone think this is going to be too tough?

I am very confused. Are the courses like semester courses?? Or year long courses? for the fall and spring semester?? I mean the courses that we choose now for FPF.

I am signed up for FPF i plan on taking
R1A (rhetoric)
Math 1A
ESPM 50AC
and maybe Philosophy 2

How is vanMunching? Is the class hard or easy and in what way?
Are there any other classes that aren’t too bad with excellent teacher?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

vanMunching is a very interesting man. Very fun class. He even plays clips of the Colbert Report from time to time. The class isn’t that hard, and it is very interesting.

Thanks! Do you know if in the FPF building its possible for instance to get from a 12-1pm discussion to a 1-2:30pm class with out being late (i am aware of berkeley time)? and if possible do you have any other course recommendations?
